Since she didn’t have the Death Note any more, Lance uses poison.

Lance knows, technically of course, that this life is here only because the Shinigami King found her very amusing, and let her and Red go through the cycle of reincarnation. However, she still remembers everything, and she’s spent so long as a Shinigami that she just can’t quite see it any other way.

She kept her wings, because they were always hers, bought between one breath and a lie and half her life. Red keeps the eyes, permanent crimson, to read names and numbers and dates out loud, though it is no good now.

            Lance doesn’t care.

She’s very careful, crushing flowers and leaves into powder and distilling carefully, one drop, two drops, three, and in between assignments she’ll take Red out and they’ll fly in the shadows where they won’t be seen, and Red will smile and say that she’s still pretty, they’re both pretty, and that isn’t this the way things should be?

Red was a pretty Shinigami, all gilt-gold with gems set into her skeletal frame. Lance remembers that well.

Now Red has long hair again, dark and full, and she wears pretty dresses with flounces, and she’s a picture-perfect model without any surgery, and Lance laughs when she hears the producers whisper about how wonderful she is.

            If only they knew.

The last man who tried to sleep with Red dissolved.

Lance doesn’t like people. She doesn’t like murderers, or rapists, or any other criminals. But she doesn’t have the Death Note, so she contents herself with killing off the obvious ones every so often. She flies through the night and she poisons everything they need, and well, the police can’t catch her now – she has no fingerprints.

She’s not completely human, after all.

Red understands. Red always followed her blindly, and it makes her sad, a little, and she wonders how Red would have turned out if she hadn’t been so obsessed with Kira, once upon a time, but mostly she enjoys Red’s company and doesn’t think about what might have been, and Red doesn’t mind.

One day, maybe, they’ll catch her, but until then, she mixes chemicals, and while she waits for them to percolate, she takes Red out for ice cream sundaes and they walk in the park and are happy.

End Fic

Completed 3/18/07

I already know I have issues. ^^ And I like happy endings! This is of course, set in the ‘Death Note’ universe I wrote.
