He clenched his teeth tightly, gloves soaked with sweat. From across the field, Blue’s Arcanine bared sharp fangs at him. Pikachu collapsed; the mouse was exhausted from the effort it had taken to charge up one last Thunderbolt. True, Blue’s Blastoise was down now, but what was he to do?

He only had one pokémon left, and he wasn’t sure if it was up to taking on Arcanine. Charizard and Lapras lay fallen, Pidgeot was still suffering from poison, and Eevee was a recent acquisition and too young to battle.

That left… he unhooked the ball from his belt with a grim smile and let fly, seeing Blue suck in a breath.

            Articuno…!

True, the ice titan would be weak to Arcanine’s fire attacks, but she was fast. “Blizzard!” Red snapped, hoping that the poke ball conditioning had done its work. Articuno nodded, a dazzling flash of her wings freezing Arcanine solid.

Blue quickly applied a Full Restore to his Arcanine, but Articuno simply hit the fire-type again with Blizzard, and finally an Ice Beam to finish. It was quick, it was clean, and it was cheap, but he had won.

Blue scowled, but stepped down, as Lance entered. He smiled.

“So, it seems we have a new Champion…”

Red beamed, as he followed Lance into the Hall of Fame. Somewhere along the line, Professor Oak came up and made a speech about how he had treated his pokémon with kindness and they were his friends and that was good, but he wasn’t paying much attention, too excited to complain.

He had won! He was Champion! Afterwards, he hugged Lance, grinning.

            “I did it!”

“Yes you did.” Lance smiled. “I didn’t doubt you would.”

“I couldn’t have done it without your help!”

Oak raised his eyebrows, before remembering. Ah yes. Lance had given Red his starter Charmander, oh, a few years ago, so he’d only given the boy a pokédex and 5 poke balls when he left. Red hadn’t minded – Oak had a sinking suspicion he’d been training his Charmander and Pidgey in the wilds around Pallet for quite a while before his official journey. Ah well.

Lance nodded, before turning to Oak with a polite nod. “Nice to see you again Professor Oak.”

“I should be going now.” Oak nodded back, before collecting a still-ranting Blue and dragging him out. Red managed to wait until they were gone, before he hugged Lance again and rose on tiptoes to kiss him, glad that he had grown a few inches taller since last time.

            Lance chuckled. “Wow.”

“I’ve missed that.” Red confessed, before wrinkling his nose. “I didn’t want to do that to anyone else, except for Mom, but that’s different.”

The Dragon Master grinned. “Yes, quite. Shall we go get something to eat now? Your pokemon can rest, and you must be hungry.”

“Wicked!” Red exclaimed. “That would be great!”

“My treat.” Lance concluded, and they spent the afternoon eating hamburgers and fries at a small stand outside the Plateau, washed down with Coke floats.

Yes, Lance decided, as he watched Red, he could take it slow. Red was so cute, and so earnest.

He’d made a good choice for a potential lover.

Red of course, knew none of this, and happily ate another fry, beaming at Lance.
