            “It’s not true.”

“But it is,” Red’s eyes are cold and hard, as he stares dispassionately at the man kneeling in front of him. “Did you think it was a game, father? Did you enjoy leaving me – leaving us on our own? Were we less important than your non-existent career, maybe?”

“Red…” His mother starts, but Red shakes his head, cutting her off.

“I always wanted to meet you. I suppose it’s my own fault for thinking you were a worthwhile person.” The Kanto League Champion scowls, clips his poke balls back on, recalls his Charizard with a flick of his wrist. Tony’s pokemon lay fallen, not that it was difficult, there’s little there, a Raticate, Pidgeotto, Poliwhirl…

Red frowns, before he stalks upstairs to his room, as his mother helps his father up.

            “I…”

Maria shakes her head as she looks at Tony. “What did you expect? He hasn’t seen you since he was four years old, and when you didn’t come home, he had to think of something…”

“I really am proud of him…” Tony begins to say, but Maria cuts him off.

“Are you? Then why didn’t you ever visit for the past ten years?”

            “I was busy-.”

“With what? It certainly wasn’t pokemon training, and I doubt you were off taking college courses or working. What were you really doing, Tony?”

            He can’t answer.

“So now you know.” Lance says quietly. Red nods, frowning into the videophone.

“This is why you wouldn’t tell me what his trainer record was, right, Lance?”

“I didn’t want to disillusion you.”

“I appreciate it.” Red smiles. “But in any case, I’ll be heading home tonight. There’s no way I’m staying here with this man.”

            “He is your father…”

“Well yes, but he hasn’t been around for the last oh, I don’t know, two-thirds of my life, maybe? I don’t feel like getting to know him again.”

Lance chuckles. “Very well. What do you want for dinner?”

            “Um… pasta?”

“Pasta.” The Dragon Master agrees. Red smiles, and hangs up. Talking to Lance always makes him feel better.

Lance makes spaghetti, laughing when he watches Red chase meatballs across his plate. Red winds strands of noodles around his fork, and licks tomato sauce off his chin, and grins. They wash the dishes together, and afterwards, Red snuggles against him on the couch, and they’re more a family than his biological one anyway.

He doesn’t really need a Father, after all. Pity Tony hasn’t figured this out yet.
