It’s so easy to forget that Ruby is a strong person. He cheers for his favorite Idols, dresses frivolously, and makes Pokéblocks and Poffins in his spare time instead of training. He drags Wallace shopping for dolls, and buys lots of pretty fabric because he’s planning on making Wallace’s pokemon cute clothing for Christmas this year. Wallace indulges him, smiling, keeping him close when they wade through bustling crowds in Lilycove City.

The former Gym Leader buys him a blueberry smoothie, watching as he lights up like a decorated tree.

Their relationship is a bit different now. It’s not as clear-cut Master and Apprentice as it was, because Ruby is definitely a strong trainer and Coordinator in his own right. But he still looks up to Wallace, as the person who taught him the true meaning of beauty. And Wallace doesn’t mind it when Ruby tags along, even if he goes to meetings. The two of them spend many happy afternoons just relaxing with their pokemon.

“Perfect!” Ruby gushes. He holds up a swath of icy blue. “I’m going to use this for your present.”

Wallace wonders what Ruby is going to make, before chuckling. “I’m sure it will be interesting.”

The scarlet-eyed boy giggles, and nods.

And they keep on pretending.
