There are fireflies outside of his window tonight.

Red smiles at them, and turns back to his homework, writing equations swiftly, efficiently, while the singer wails on the radio in the background. Most children would probably be out playing, but Red isn’t a child, he’s Champion, and he’s legally an adult since he was ten anyways. He has schoolwork to do since he has no time during the school year, where he has to pass legislation and defend his Champion position and well, so many other things.

Lance smiles at him, offers him lemonade frosty with ice, and Red sips slowly, wondering that if this is the only part of summer he will experience. Two hours later, Lance drags him outside and they walk along the beach, feeling the cool air on their faces while the stars glitter above.

After all, there’s not point in wasting his only vacation, right?

Perhaps Lance is right, Red thinks, and slips his hand into his.
