            “I’m scared.”

“I’m scared too.” Lance told Red. The building was shaking. They were both huddled under the Champion’s desk, trying to keep their heads low.

Red never thought that he would be grateful for the earthquake safety drills he had endured every few months in grade school, but now…

He had grabbed his poke belt and mug of tea when the shaking had started and taken shelter. Lance had joined him seconds later.

The tremors were still going, but at least, they were safe, and the building hadn’t collapsed.

Red could feel his heart beating as he clutched Lance tightly. “Lance…”

            “Shh.”

When it was over, there was a dead calm in the air. Lance kept a firm grip on Red as they edged out from underneath the desk. Things had fallen topsy-turvy all over the room and a lamp had smashed, along with an ugly bust of President Goodman, but they were alive and unharmed.

Lance released his Aerodactyl to scan for any damage as they carefully picked their way across the room. It was lucky that their offices were located on the ground floor, though not so much if the structure collapsed.

            Red shivered.

When they made it out to the exit, the rescue teams and their pokemon were already picking through the rubble.

“Curse the man who chose to build this here.” Goodman seethed. “Right next to a fault line!”

There were Nurse Joys bustling around, tending to the injured who had not been so lucky. Red winced when he caught sight of several pokemon that were being eased out from under the wreckage.

            He had been lucky…

Lance gently walked him to a calmer area. He bought Red a vanilla milkshake and fries.

Red was surprised that he could even eat, but he supposed that fear could work up an appetite too.

“It’s all right.” The Dragon Master soothed. “We survived. You’re alive, and I’m alive, and our pokemon are safe.”

The boy nodded quietly, still nursing his drink.

Lance smiled, and kissed him gently, and Red didn’t mind one bit.
