Max sniffles, wiping his tears away irritably. He’s not sure why this had to happen. What does Ash see in someone like Misty? She’s ugly and scrawny and not nice at all, and he knows that she and Ash fight all the time, so why did she have to kiss him? It’s not right!

There’s blood welling up over his knee, he fell earlier over a rock and probably scraped something, but he doesn’t care! Ash likes him, doesn’t’ he? He doesn’t think he’s annoying any more, right?

Sure, he was a bit of a smart aleck at first, but now he and Ash are friends! And he’d like to be more than friends, if only Ash let him!

He hears footsteps, and shivers, trying to blend into the scenery. Is it May? He can’t face his sister now! Or maybe it will be Brock. Brock might be okay…

Ash steps around a bend, looking worried. “Hey, Max. Are you all right?”

“Wh-why are you here?” His voice cracks and he hates it!

“I was worried.” Ash frowns. “Did Misty do something to you?”

Well, in a way she did, but it’s selfish to say it, right?

“Aw, come on Max. You can tell me?”

“S-She kissed you!” He blurted out angrily. * That bitch… *

            The boy laughed. “I know.”

Did that mean Ash didn’t mind? Or worse yet, he had liked it? Max shuddered. He didn’t want to know…

“I’m not sure why she did.” The Pallet trainer scratched the back of his head self-consciously. “But I didn’t really want her to.”

            He didn’t?

            “We’re just good friends.”

            Can he really trust that?

“Sorry if it made you uncomfortable. I tried to push her off.”

That he hadn’t seen. He’d just dropped his firewood and fled. Maybe that hadn’t been the best idea.

“So, um, you can come back to camp now.” Ash grinned. “Brock took Misty off to get something; I don’t know how he can stand shopping with her. But you’re okay now, right?”

Max shakily got to his feet. “Y-yeah…”

“Great!” Ash gave him an impulsive hug. “Let’s get your knee looked at too. I think Brock left the first aid kit.”

He let the older boy lead him back to camp. So Ash didn’t like Misty that way. Good…

            He still had a chance…
