The noisemakers popped, showering the assembled group with colorful confetti, as champagne bottles shot their corks into the air and bubbly white foam drenched them all. Red grinned brightly as he hugged Lance tightly, watching the glitzy silver ball fall from the high tower and smash into a billion pieces on the pavement below.

Cheers and laughter and applause filled the air, and then the partying began, as long tables covered with delicacies were unveiled. Red and Lance smiled from behind their Year 3007 masks, glad that it had their faces and tonight, they were as anonymous as the others. They ate heartily from the banquet dishes, feeding each other bits of nut and fruit and sandwiches, toasted each other with sweet raspberry wine, and retreated quietly into their chambers several hours later, while the festivities were still in full swing, flashes of colored fire illuminating the sky every so often.

Red took off his mask with a grin splitting his face as he stifled a yawn. “That was great…”

Lance nodded, golden eyes dilated as he kissed his lover. “Sleep sounds good.”

They changed into their pajamas and then cuddled into bed together, and fell asleep with the New Year still ringing in their minds.
