She’s a pretty child, with long dark hair and luminous golden eyes, and her parents clap their hands excitedly when she comes home with a Charmander in tow, muddy and bruised and her school uniform covered with grime. They ruffle her hair and send her off to take a bath and don’t ask what happened, because she’s an only child and they want her to turn out perfect, to be perfect.

She wears black and white, and takes comfort in shades, not colors. She sets the Cards out neatly, hexagram design, and flips over the center row, smiling as she sees Light and Dark and Firey. She turns over one more card, just to make sure, and sees Ninetales preening in a golden frame.

            She knows.

Twenty years later, she’s standing in front of the League she created, watching the sunset, and she clasps her hands in front of her chest because the crossbar plates have tilted in her mind and her time is up. The world belongs to another now.

And she falls to her knees as her body melts, shifts, changes into the golden Sacred Shield, and she hopes Lance will take good care of the Realm in the meantime.
