Red counts the coins in his piggy bank, frowning slightly. For a child, it’s difficult to do math, even elementary addition, but he works hard at it, scribbling large loops of black ink on paper.

Lance doesn’t know this. He’s busy down in the kitchen, preparing lunch. The knives on his fingertips glitter and spark as he slashes vegetables into neat chunks, landing with a soft plop in kelp-based stock, simmering quietly on the stove along with chicken grilling brown.

Red finishes counting, and he smiles, lighting up his face. He waves to his Father as he leaves the house, traipsing down the route to the store on the corner that old lady Nancy runs. The lady smiles and wraps his purchase for him, and he runs home, excited.

Father is waiting, with lunch spread on the table. They eat, and then Red shyly proffers the package. Lance opens it, and finds a cape of long dark silk, in a brilliant shade of red. How fitting.

He hugs him close, and kisses him, and Red smiles, glad that his gift was appreciated.
