How much can change in one year?

Red isn’t sure, but he certainly hates the changes this year has wrought. Every time he passes by the elaborate playroom, he feels anger curl in his heart, and his hands curl into fists, despite his sharp nails.

He keeps his nails sharp now, just like Father does, and Father is right – they do make wonderful slashing weapons when your pokemon are all tied up and cannot help you escape a trap.

He wishes he could break Father free out of the web those lawyers and councilmen and fawning mothers have woven.

He wants to kill those two grubs, they’re worms, useless! He’s related to them only through his mother, whose name is not worth saying, and Father – they aren’t Father’s children at all!

No wonder he doesn’t like them.

But Red is loved, and he knows it, and as they stand on the balcony watching the sunrise on New Year’s Day, he resolves to bear them.

Father holds him close, and kisses him, and it doesn’t feel strange at all.
