“I don’t understand,” Lance says. His eyes are sad, but he isn’t crying. He’s holding Red close to him, and his pristine white gloves are streaked with black blood. “Why? Why did this have to happen?”

“His time was up.” Agatha says gravely. “He has only sixteen years to live. That is the way his fate has been spun.”

The Dragon Master glared at her, not relinquishing his grip on the corpse. “I see how it is then.”

“Lance…” Lorelei approached her cousin, “Agatha’s right. There’s nothing you can do. His time is up, and you can’t fight death…”

“No.” Lance agrees, and grudgingly sets Red down. “But I can make sure he won’t be going there alone.”

Lorelei shakes her head, and she and Agatha walk away, because they don’t want to see the inevitable future.
