When Red swears loyalty to Kanto and the Indigo League, he feels cheated. It’s almost… cheap, extracting a promise that he won’t harm the economy or the state of affairs when he becomes Champion. At that time, he’s ten and really doesn’t understand what he answers, but the way President Goodman smiles at him when he’s done makes his spine prickle.

Afterwards, Lance makes him chocolate chip cookies and milk, and tells him exactly what he agreed to. Red blinks, because he can’t understand a lot of the big words, but he’s more than happy to cuddle up with Lance and stay with him, and there’s not much to do since he’s still little.

When Red is fourteen, the duties of Champion slam down. It makes him furious, that they throw all this work in his lap and at the same time prevent him from changing anything. Bastards.

But at least, at fourteen, he isn’t quite as alone, and the nights he spends in Lance’s bed are quite wonderful indeed.

And when he’s sixteen, and they break the oath to save the world, he’s happy.
