Daniel and Dudley hear voices at night a lot. When they huddle amongst pillows and piles of stuffed animals, even as they drown in splendor with enough toys to outfit an army of children, they are still frightened.

Red is crying, and it sounds like he hurts.

Daniel wonders of Dad is hurting Red. Dudley doesn’t like Dad. He hopes Dad is hurting Red.

Maybe Red will die?

They both grin.

If Red dies, they’re sure Dad will love them.

Lance holds Red close as he gasps for air, and kisses away the tears on his face. Red pants, waiting for his heartbeat to slow, and rests his head against his Father’s shoulder, even as he prepares for more.
