            He was purring.

Red noticed this in mortification, but Lance’s paws felt so nice in his hair… his mate licked his face, and he did not struggle.

The zookeepers outside watched as the Lance herded the Red back to their den.

“So do you think they’ll be having cubs any time soon?”

Agatha shook her head as she adjusted her spectacles. “Highly unlikely. The Champions species is so rare that it is lucky we rescued these two from that illegal breeding center. Also, the Red is… damaged.”

            “Damaged!” Bruno gaped.

“Yes, damaged.” Agatha shrugged. “They were both gelded. It is assumed that that will decrease the level of aggressiveness.”

            “Does it?”

“Hardly. Haven’t you noticed what color the Lance’s pelts are? It’s not the red-and-black one it would normally wear. It’s black with a red over-pelt…”

Bruno shuddered. “But the last case of one turning that color… it wiped out the entire species of Yellows in the Kanto Continent!”

“Exactly. So we must be wary. It is unpredictable right now. Only it’s mate can control it…”

“I want to go home.” Red whispered, as he nuzzled Lance’s cheek. “I don’t want to be here. There are humans all around us.”

“I know,” Lance soothed, as he pawed at his mate’s hair. “But we can’t leave. I can’t break their walls.”

“I wish we had the shinies.” Red whimpered.

            “I only have two…”

“I have two too. That leaves four…”

“They’re so cute!” The little girl squeaked, as she watched the two animals in the enclosure. The Red looked quite happy, though the sight of it munching on a piece of raw steak was scary. She watched as the Lance used its sharper claws to cut the steak into bite-sized pieces and feed them to his mate.

Red whined as Lance slipped another piece into his mouth. “They’re watching us…”

“Hush.” Lance whispered. “As long as they don’t know we have the shinies, it will be all right.”

            “Really?”

“Really.” The Lance nuzzled the Red. “Now eat more. You’re too thin.”

Red obediently ate the steak, watching as his mate licked his paws clean of blood. Lance had sharp teeth and sharp claws. He would be safe here.

            He purred.

“What if the Red is too young to mate?” Lorelei asked.

Agatha shook her head. “Haven’t you noticed the color of its hand-pelts? They’re black. The youngest Reds don’t have the black hand-pelts, or the red-and-white outer pelt, or the red-and-white head-pelt. This has all three of them. It’s quite of age.”

Red whined as Lance pushed their pelts aside and bent over him, nipping at his throat. He obediently surrendered, feeling hot and warm and sighing as his mate collapsed against him bonelessly, tired. He licked his lips to reassure him.

“We have to get out of here soon. Even if they’re feeding us well… I’m afraid.” Lance whispered.

            Red nodded. He understood.

“… I think they’re cute.” Lorelei smiled, as she watched the Lance guard the Red. The vet’s needle flashed as he lunged forwards, only to cry out in pain as the Lance sank sharp teeth into his gloved hand.

“… Bruno doesn’t think so.” Agatha observed dryly, watching him nurse his injured hand. “I wonder why … well… perhaps we should hide the pills in their food?”

            “It’s worth a try.”

To keep them safe and protected, here in the National Kanto Zoo…

Lance sniffed at the food, baring his teeth in a snarl as he tore off a bloody strip of meat. It tasted wrong. Red’s stomach grumbled, but he said nothing as he watched Lance sniff all the bowls, before shaking his head.

“Is it poisonous?” He asked worriedly.

Lance nodded. “They won’t let us go away so easily.”

“I have four shinies now… we just have to wait a little longer…” Red frowned as Lance bit down on his wrist, letting blood well up.

            “Here.”

“Thank you.” And he tasted, and felt hungry no longer.

“This can’t go on.” Lorelei shook her head. “At this rate…”

“I know. But if they escape…”

Lorelei said nothing more, but that night, she brought un-medicated steak for them, and she thought they really did understand.

Two days later, they were gone, and the Zoo was nothing more than a burnt smear of black earth.

“She was nice. The sky-hair woman.” Red said, as they lay in their new den. They had patted the dirt of the floor smooth, and they had used their shinies to escape.

Lance nodded, feeding him bits of delicious red apple. Red purred, and looked at the sky outside. It was such a pretty blue.

            “We are safe now?”

            Lance nodded.

“Good.” His mate replied, and then purred again, an invitation. Lance kissed him, tasting apples, but over it, the blue sky of freedom.

            Free…

Dude, I have no excuse for this. Too much Elricest zoofic! But it’s cute and purry, ne? And…. Yeah. The Shinies were the Gym Badges. I guess they’re kind of like kittens? Cat ears and claws and teeth…

Some Zoofic Information I have complied (I created this!)

Lance and Red are members of a species called ‘Champions’ who only mate with each other. Their pokemon are summoned as they acquire ‘shinies’ (gym badges) and grow older. Their pelt patterns also change then. Young Reds wear a blue pelt (jeans) and black pelt (black T-shirt), and as he grows older he acquires black hand-pelts (his electric-proof gloves), a red-and-white head pelt (League cap) and red-and-white outer pelt (red-and-white jacket). Young Lances were a pure black pelt (black bodysuit), and as they grow older, acquire the red and black pelt (red-and-black bodysuit of anime! Lance). Then, if they get evil enough or fierce enough, they grow a pure black pelt with a red over-pelt and a black pelt over that (manga! Lance attire with red jacket and black cape).

Lances hate Yellows. They are both predators but attack each other. Yellows will kill both Reds and Lances, though if they kill a Red that already has a Pikachu, they will steal it.

Lance’s partner pokemon is Dratini who soon evolves into Dragonair. Red’s partner pokemon is Poliwag who soon evolves into Poliwhirl.

Red is the one who carries the babies, though some strange reproductive process (MPREG?) and Lance has sharp claws and teeth that he hunts with. He provides food for his mate.

Brothers will mate each other.

Manga! Lance has healing powers and can communicate telepathically with pokémon, so that stays.
