The wind howled outside the small house in Pallet. Red shivered, moving close to Lance. His father smiled.

“Scared, little one?”

“Yes.” Red whimpered.

Lance pulled the brightly patterned quilt around them more securely. “Would hot chocolate and a story help?”

Red’s eyes lit up. “Yes!”

Lance headed downstairs, returning moments later with two mugs of hot chocolate. Red smiled as he sipped.

“What story shall I tell you tonight?”

Red smiled. “How about Hansel and Gretel.”

“Very well…”

The wind’s ferocity had diminished by the time Lance tucked Red into bed, placing a kiss on his forehead. “Good night, Red. I love you.”

“I love you too.” Red grinned, and fell into sweet dreams.
