Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful princess. Her father was worried though, that those foreign princes would not be worthy of his darling daughter, so he devised a cunning, if overused plan, to keep her safe.

In those days, it was common practice to lock a princess in a tall tower with no company save a maidservant or two, and hire a dragon to guard it. Then of course, whatever prince proved his mettle and slew the foul beast was obviously worthy of the fair princess!

Princess Red was no exception, of course. Her father locked her in a tower, promised to send food packages daily, and hired a dragon.

This did not make Princess Red very happy. So with no one else to talk to, for the maid was mute and stupid, she decided to talk to the dragon. Great was her surprise, then, when she spotted it for the first time. It was not a particularly large dragon, and it was a pretty one, all silvery-white polished scales, and it allowed her to pet it and stroke its cute little horns.

Yes, it was a pretty dragon, and on the third month of her imprisonment, when the number of dead knights numbered sixteen and Princess Red was heartily sick of it, the dragon flew away with her on its back.

She was so delighted that she kissed it as they landed, and lo and behold, the dragon’s scales shed and instead there stood instead a beautiful boy in shimmering white armor.

And he took her away to his castle in the sky and she never had to worry about her father and what his ministers thought again.

And best of all, the dragon didn’t have to die.
