            President Goodman ducked into an alleyway, panting for breath. Ever since the Kanto Governing Council had passed that ill-advised bill to raise the minimum age for trainers to fourteen instead of ten, a lot of angry trainers had been coming after him.

            It made sense, logically, that children should be well equipped before heading out into the world, and ten-year olds just couldn’t handle it, but by the same token, even a few gym leaders and more prominent figures had to step down.

            A flash of light illuminated the dark spaces, and he stared at the two figures that had materialized. He recognized Lance… and Red.

            Red was twelve, and thus, with the new law, his Championship was forfeit.

            “Pikachu, Thunderbolt!” Red ordered, catching sight of the man. Goodman ducked behind a dumpster, wincing, but it did little good. Lance watched impassively as Red dragged Goodman out of the alley with Venusaur’s help. Outside, other trainers milled, and a loud roar went up when they caught sight of the man.

            Red had Venusaur toss Goodman into the fray, and then he left the scene, not wishing to watch the ensuing carnage.

 

            The next day, Kanto’s Council wisely revoked the bill.

 

            “Was it worth it?” Lance asked, as he held Red close. Red beamed up at his lover.

            “Of course.”

As for the ten-year old thing, I might mention that in a pokemon novel (Japanese) written by Shudo, the legal age of adulthood is 10 (when you graduate elementary school) and that’s when most trainers leave on their journey.
