Red doesn’t want many things. He’s not a greedy person by nature, and as long as he has his pokemon, a tent, and canned food, he’s happy. It’s nice to have friends like Green and Blue, and all the gym leaders, but he’s thankful when he finally finds someone to love.

His friends are accepting, for the most part, and those that don’t approve of his relationship; well maybe they were only fair weather birds.

Red knows it’s unconventional, the fact that he’s chosen Lance. Lance was the leader of the Elite Four, the person who tried to destroy humanity. The fact that she’s really a woman is also another eyebrow-raiser.

But he sees the broken child beneath the glamour, and he is more forgiving than most, so he welcomes Lance into his arms and into his heart, and for those of his friends that allow and acknowledge it… he is grateful.

So is Lance, though she never speaks of it, and words can never convey how indebted she is to Red.
