He can hear them laughing at him, but his eyes are mad, furious crimson, and the laughter quickly dies off as they see what he’s written in blood on the walls of the cell. He smiles, crooked madness, as he dares them to come closer. Some of them jeer through the bars, but he can see the fear in their eyes, and he allows a slow, mocking smile to spread across his face.

He who laughs last laughs the best, after all.

They think they’ve won, when they find him dead in his cell, and the jailers laugh and point at the drying names on the wall, but they don’t laugh long, oh no, not long at all, before they’re clutching their chests in pain.

Somewhere, a new Shinigami folds coal-black feathers against his back, and chuckles, coldly.
