“… Sayu?” Sachiko asked.

“Yes?” Her daughter said with a smile. “What is it?”

“Your… ears…”

“Oh!” Sayu flushed. “I, um, went to the mall with Mi-chan and Kayoko-chan today…” She touched the plain gold studs in her ears a bit self-consciously. “And I saved up my allowance for three months, and it’s not against the school rules, so…”

Her mother said nothing, sweeping her into a hug. “I don’t mind, Sayu.”

“Really?”

“Really.” Sachiko smiled. It was so nice to have Sayu around. It made Light’s absence less conspicuous, and she could remember how frightened she had been when getting her own ears pierced, oh, years ago…

“Why don’t we go pick out some earrings together this weekend? We haven’t done anything together for a while…”

Sayu beamed, and Sachiko knew that she had done the right thing.
