It’s always a bit of a switch to do, no matter what. Even if their outward appearance remains the same, the inner workings have shifted, ice and darkness, moon and sun, fire and light, and above all, the power of dragons.

Being a Guardian is complicated. Lance has to be very, very careful when she gets depressed, because if she falls too far off the bridge of sanity she will wake Crystal and even at her worst, she can’t compare with the darkest depths of her soul. Charlotte tries to stay happy and giddy, because she doesn’t want the fake confidence and emotionless aura her light brings.

Lance doesn’t like it when she slips, because Crystal just doesn’t love Red – and that changes everything. Catelyn does, and she’s grateful, because she can take care of him sometimes, when she’s too tired to do it, since she’s cheerful and innocent and the kind of girl who would enjoy adventuring.

Not being in love is the worst transition of all, because if she forgets the most important thing, nothing else matters, right? Even duty can be cast aside, if necessary, as a last resort…

Yes, Lance loves Red, but Crystal hates him, because she doesn’t see how Lance can love someone who’s betrayed her and hurt her and broken her to bits, and she thinks her alternate is foolish for it.

That’s why Lance has to be careful.
