Ruby, he shimmers – shines like a star. Wallace smiles, remembering the spark of challenge in his eyes when they met for the first time, in front of the Slateport City Contest Hall. The boy’s eyes were what caught his attention, not the multitude of ribbons pinned onto his clothing. Red like claret, they burned and blazed with passion, and though Ruby lost that contest, Wallace still found him worthy, and when the Last Battle was over, he was proud, so proud of his student.

Age hasn’t dimmed Ruby one iota, and experience simply tempers his flame, from white-hot to a more mature red. Of course, Ruby credits this all to Wallace, often leaving his teacher unfairly fending off reporters while he and his pokemon party.

But it’s nice to know that for now, they can relax and concentrate on nothing but contests, and Wallace watches their Milotic swim together, while Ruby sleeps in his arms. He shifts his position, kisses him softly, and joins him in slumber.

Their light is none so bright now, but perhaps it is better this way.
