It’s not like Red consciously sets out to make friends and gather allies, but his childish nature and earnest heart endear him to everyone he meets – save for Team Rocket, of course. When he swings by Saffron City, ostensibly to purchase some more supplies since he doesn’t want to Surf to Cinnabar again, Sabrina smiles and invites him over. It’s peaceful to sit with someone who doesn’t eye her warily, even though he knows about her psychic powers, and he digs through the homemade brownies with gusto and praises her – Better than my mom’s! – Until she blushes.

            He’s charming.

He says that since he has all eight badges now, he’s going to challenge the Elite Four. She says she’s sure he’ll do well, and no, she’s not using foresight. He giggles and shows her his Charmeleon – now a Charizard, and Lapras smiles.

Then he turns serious, and asks if she knows anything about the Elite Four.

Sabrina nods. She does attend the quarterly Gym Leader meetings. She suspects he’ll have no trouble with Lorelei or Bruno, but Agatha and Lance… well, if she had any ice pokemon she would lend him them.

            It’s all right.

Agatha is the one who will be difficult.

Red remembers fighting ghosts in the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. It gave him the creeps, and even though now he has a Silph Scope he is still a little bit afraid. But these ghosts are part poison, and there is one element that is very effective against poison.

            Psychic-type.

Red eats another brownie, as Sabrina tries to figure out how to make her offer without pushing him too much. Maybe if she can pass it off as friendship…

Lapras chuckles, like she knows. She probably does. Sabrina hasn’t shown interest in any of the boys around Saffron City, and the black belts that hit on her are irritating, but Red…

            Red will do very well.

            “Red?”
            “Yes, Sabrina?”

“I was wondering if you could do me a favor…”

“Oh! Sure!” He beams, and she hands over a poke ball.

“I’ve been very busy working with Silph lately, and I don’t really have time to train Kadabra, so he’s been lonely. Could you take care of him for a while?”

“Sure!” Red agreed. “I’ll bring him with me when we fight the Elite Four! I’m sure he’ll have fun!”

            Jackpot!

She smiled as she handed over the poke ball. Red chatted with her for a while longer, and made some small talk, before he left.

Three days later, he was Indigo League Champion, and her Alakazam was in third place in the Hall of Fame.

            She was so proud.

“Sabrina!” Red cheered, as he dashed into her house a week later. “I won!”

            “I saw.” She smiled.

“Alakazam was great! He beat all of Agatha’s ghost pokemon for me! I was worried for a bit but he was so cool! You’ve really trained him well!”

She chuckles, accepting the praise. “I see. And what about Lapras?”

“Lapras was brilliant! She was good against Bruno’s pokemon!”

Lapras turned a delicate, slightly darker shade of blue at the praise.

“I’m glad you’re doing well.” Sabrina told her, patting her on the head.

“Yes! So!” Red grinned up at her. “Green and I are going after Mewtwo too, and since he’s a psychic pokemon, well, we wondered – I mean, I suggested – do you want to come with us?”

            Did she?

“Of course. I would love to.”

“Yay! I thought you would!” Red grinned. “So here’s Alakazam back, and we’re leaving on Monday, so you’ve got a few days to pack, and it will be nice to have someone who can cook, because I am so sick of eating macaroni and cheese…”

He skips off soon after, and Sabrina packs, and ponders, and smiles.

She’s looking forwards to this adventure.

And maybe… maybe she can tell him how she feels.
