It’s intoxicating, this power he has, so much that it takes his breath away. He laughs triumphantly, because now, he has won. The most powerful pokemon in the world is his! He dances a jig in his underwear underneath the gibbous moon, windows wide open, punk rock music making the building shake.

Mew sits sadly, curled up in the Master Ball. She doesn’t want to fight, does-not-want, but there is nothing she can do.

He challenges an Elite trainer to a battle, watches their shock when the cute pink creature appears in a flash of ruby. He orders Psychic, blasting their Hariyama back, and cackles.

He abruptly stops when the other trainer pulls a gun out of his pocket and shoots him. Blood spurts from his chest as Mew is taken away.

He doesn’t feel drunk any more. Just cold.

Mew watches. She’s passed from trainer to trainer, sometimes only minutes one after another. There is something deadly about being rare and one-of-a-kind, and she knows it. It causes people to do things they normally wouldn’t.

This power is loose, and free, and deadly, after all.

Finally, when she’s lost count of how many humans it’s been, one trainer looks at her, and breaks open the lock on the Master Ball, and let’s her go. And she’s free, flying above the clouds and with the stars.

He watches her leave, grinning.

And now, its Mew’s turn to feel transcendental bliss, because that is what being free is.
