Lance is hiding something from him. Red doesn’t know what, or why, but he wants to find out because it makes him uncomfortable. He and Lance are together now, so they should trust each other, right?

So that night, when Lance sneaks out of the Plateau, Red has Haunter hide him in Haze and together they sneak after the Dragon Master. He hopes that she isn’t seeing someone else and trying to keep it a secret. Lance wouldn’t cheat, would he?

That makes his chest hurt so he shoves the thought away and keeps walking.

Lance stops in front of a store, and a single light flashes behind the door. With a sigh, he turns and leaves.

            Was that a signal?

He and Haunter creep to the store after she takes off. Hopefully, she is going back home and will not miss him. But all Red sees is boxes and boxes of something in the window. He has Raichu use Flash, and then he sees that it is a candy store. Eh?

Why on earth is Lance going there?

Red suddenly feels bad. Lance doesn’t seem to be doing anything wrong, so he sighs, and recalls Raichu and Haunter, absentmindedly praising them for listening to his orders so well. Then, he releases Charizard to fly him back to the Plateau.

Lance is making tea when he returns.

Red doesn’t like tea very much, but he’s feeling too jumbled up inside to sleep, so he asks if he can have a cup. Lance smiles, adds a dollop of honey to his, and then they head to the living area.

The couch is soft and upholstered in plush tan fabric. Red sinks into it, trying to sort out what he’s thinking.

            Lance… is mysterious.

Red likes mysterious things, sometimes, but he would also like to know more about Lance. He’d like to find out everything, really…

            Is he being too clingy?

Red hasn’t exactly had a girlfriend or boyfriend before Lance. Sometimes, he’s afraid of messing up, but how can he say these things? It’s so embarrassing!

“Red,” Lance breaks the silence. “Is something wrong?”

“No, nothing,” Red is ashamed to admit he followed her, so he says nothing.

“All right then. Don’t stay up too late.” She stands up and kisses him, briefly, and he likes it.

They hug and their kisses are chaste, because she doesn’t want to hurt him too much. He’s still little…

That doesn’t mean it isn’t hard for her to resist temptation.

Soon, the Champion falls asleep on the couch, lost in thought, and the next morning, belatedly realizes that it’s his birthday when Lance brings him pancakes covered with frosting and sprinkles, and two wrapped presents.

Red blushes when he opens the packages, finding that the first one is a box of chocolates shaped like Pokemon – how cute! – With fifteen different fruit flavors, but it’s the second package that really catches his attention.

“A-Are you saying you want to marry me?”

“If you want to, yes,” She admits. Maybe it’s not traditional for a woman to propose, but she would prefer that they get somewhere…

He kisses Lance, and nods. “Yes.”

He thinks he’s figured out what she was secretly purchasing now.

Months later, when Lance pushes sweat-damp hair away from his forehead and holds him gently, he’s brave enough to confess, and Lance just chuckles.

It’s odd for someone to care so much about her. Her grandfather never saw past her status and Clair only wanted to defeat her, but Red… there may be potential here, for a real, lasting relationship. She can hope, can’t she?

Red nuzzles Lance’s collarbone, closes his eyes, and smiles.

            His wife…

            He likes it.
