Yukito was quite surprised when he discovered that Li-kun had never been to a beach before. Syaoran had tried to brush it off, saying it was no big deal, but when he was around Yukito, things just seemed to get stuck in his throat and never come out again, so he didn’t really have time – or room – to protest, and who would complain about going out with Yukito-san anyways? And best of all, Kinimoto wasn’t here…

            “Li-kun?”

“C-coming!” He managed to get out. He checked his bag. Towel. Sunscreen. Water bottle. Money… oh. Yukito-san said that where they were going, there were a lot of American tourists. He threw the phrasebook in his backpack just in case. That ought to be everything…

They were taking a bus to get there, and he got to sit next to Yukito for an entire two hours! Or, it would have been two hours but about an hour into the ride – he still hadn’t worked up the courage to say anything – the bus broke down!

He felt like complaining. This wasn’t fair! For once he could be with Yukito without Kinimoto or her annoying brother’s influence and this had to happen! He was about to start cursing his fate to the Jade Emperor when he realized that perhaps this wasn’t such a bad thing after all. The only other bus patrons were several old ladies, and surely, nothing imminently dangerous could happen?

… Wait, unless a Clow Card had stopped the bus? He began to think. Loop? Perhaps, but that made an endless road. There wasn’t a ‘Break’ card, not that he knew of. And it couldn’t be any of the cards that had already shown up, so what was going on?

Yukito looked at the bus with a slightly depressed expression, although Yukito could never truly fall into depression. “LI-kun, perhaps we will have to postpone our trip after all.”

What? Syaoran was adamant. He wouldn’t get another chance like this in… forever! He wasn’t just going to let a day with Yukito slip out of his fingers! And he did want to go to the beach… although it was probably Yukito’s influence there.

This would not do at all.

Syaoran thought quickly. If Yukito left, well, that would defeat the entire purpose of coming out here on the trip. So…

Hand went to his sword amulet, a second later the sword was out, another second later the Time Card had been put into play and whatever was ailing the bus had been fixed quite nicely…

He managed to shrink and hide his amulet again, before the brown fog rolled away.

Yukito caught him as he fell.

“Li-kun, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?”

“Just a little… hot I think.” He decided, lying through a rampant blush. “I’m not used to temperatures this warm.” A lie, but it would cover well enough…

Yukito-san nodded. “Don’t worry, Li-kun. I’ll go get you some water. Stay here. I’ll be right back.”

            He watched as Yukito-san left.

Meanwhile, Yukito had found a call box several yards down the road, but no sign of refreshment. He wondered briefly whether or not he should have packed some drinks and snacks, but banished the thought. The bus was fixed, and they would be getting to the beach soon, and surely there were plenty of refreshment stands there? Of course there were! He fondly remembered the candied apples and shaved ice and other delicacies…

But the beach was an hour away, and they were in a mountain road…

            What to do?

He went back to Syaoran, who had taken off his shirt and was lying there with his eyes closed. Poor child. Yukito helped him back on the bus, although he was annoyed – as were the others, when they discovered that the air conditioning had gone on the fritz. Was this the reason why the driver had stopped the bus?

It didn’t seem to be damaged….

The bus driver scratched his head, perplexed. He could have sworn that the vehicle had broken down… and that was the reason why he had gotten everyone out, but now, it didn’t seem as if that were the case at all.

Perhaps the summer heat was getting to him?

In any case, the driver continued on down the road and they were soon at the beach. By that time, Syaoran had managed to worm his way into Yukito’s lap, but the older boy simply thought he was scared and held him while whispering nothing important. Yukito really was too sweet for his own good sometimes.

But that was what attracted people to him like flies to honey after all…

Honestly, if asked later, Yukito would say that they’d had a fine time at the beach and smile, and that would be that. After they got off the bus, Yukito bought Syaoran lemonade – he did look quite peaked, and then loaded up on snacks and food for both of them, quite a good sized set, all in all.

They were sitting by the water watching the ocean, really, because neither of them felt awake enough to swim yet, when an American tourist had come and tripped over their… beach ball? Yes, Yukito had brought a beach ball and now it was inflated.

The tourist spat out a mouthful of sand and shouted something that Syaoran didn’t quite catch.

Yukito blushed, finally piecing together the phrase, with some helpful obscene gestures from said tourist what was being said. Syaoran flipped through his phrasebook and began wishing he’d paid more attention in his English class at Tomoeda elementary – it hadn’t been required in Hong Kong, for some reason…

            “Yukito-san? What did he say?”

Yukito colored, deciding that saying it wouldn’t be proper, so he pulled a pen out of his bag and hastily scribbled down a few kanji on the page. Syaoran’s eyes looked ready to pop out as his eyes shot between the tourist – who was still standing there, and the words.

By now, the blonde man began to sense that perhaps something was wrong…

What Syaoran shouted at him in response wasn’t quite Japanese, it was mostly Mandarin, so he took out his own phrase book and began flipping through it, trying to figure out what was being said. Of course, Yukito wasn’t much help this time, as he didn’t understand mandarin…

In any case, it wasn’t clear later who threw the first punch, but everything exploded in a burst of sand. Syaoran gritted his teeth as he tried to get a good shot in at the tourist – unfortunately, the man had piled on so much sunscreen that it was well nigh impossible to get a good grip. And when the man realized it was just a kid fighting him, he managed to use his superior strength to toss the boy into the water.

Syaoran came up spluttering, and as Yukito moved to stop the conflict, he stepped on a dropped bottle of sunscreen. The resulting pressure splattered everyone in a radius of several feet with flying lotion…

It was not a good situation by any means…

Luckily, the tourist’s girlfriend came up and managed to drag her irate boyfriend away, and Yukito ushered Syaoran off to the showers and got him cleaned up, and then they found an empty area of sand and had ice cream together…

So despite the unpleasant… accidents, the trip didn’t turn out to be so bad after all.

The End

Okay! I hope that’s in canon enough! ^^
