The harvest moon was low in the sky, sending plump beams of silvery light over the gaily-lit tents. Laughter and music wafted through the air, mingling with the smells of hot red bean soup and sweet buns. A man was hawking fans; lovely half-moon shapes of finely pressed oiled paper with flower designs.

Koga stroked his chin as he studied one. The design depicted a curl of wisteria flowers. Janine ran up, a plastic bag containing a goldfish in one hand, a stick with two half-eaten takoyaki in the other.

“Father, this is great!” She smiled brightly. “Can I go on the Ponyta ride?”

Aya ran after her, the tails of her lavender yukata flapping slightly. “Janine!” She was hardly out of breath, and Koga nodded to his sister.

Decision made, he turned to the vendor and purchased the fan.

Aya blushed slightly as her brother handed it to her. “Thank you…”

            “It suits you.”

“Father,” Janine tugged on his sleeve. “Can I?”

“Yes.” He said simply. Janine gave an excited squeal and ran towards the merry-go-round, while Koga and Aya followed at a statelier pace.

            “She is a wonderful girl.”

“Yes. She takes after her Father.” Aya smiled. “I am proud to be her aunt.”

“Perhaps more than she knows,” Koga intoned quietly, brushing a strand of stray hair behind her ear.

He slipped his hand into hers, and she smiled, glad to be a part of his family.
