When he thought about it, Ash realized that his whole life was pretty much a quest. Sometimes, when he was feeling philosophical, he could even trace the stages of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. Of course, he was usually not in the mood for this sort of thing, but even so, it was interesting.

Maybe he is thinking too much.

The only thing he’s missing is a damsel in distress to rescue, but that is okay. Misty, May and Dawn fit the sidekick role better, and maybe someday, he can cross the Return threshold and grow up. He is not really looking forwards to that, not yet. Being a kid is so much better! Adults lose a lot of happiness, and responsibility is not nice.

But when he sees Sabrina after she has been cured of her insanity, and the Gym Leader kisses him for the first time, Ash is uncomfortably reminded of the Goddess and Temptress all in one. It’s kind of strange, but good, and he grins as he decides that maybe getting older won’t be such a bad thing.

Especially when Sabrina drops by on his eighteenth birthday, and gives him a gift he won’t soon forget.

A happy marriage is what all heroes dream of, right? Then he has his fairy-tale ending after all.
