Giovanni is not a sentimental man.

He keeps trophies, fancy crystal and gold and antiques, not because they remind him of anything in particular, but because they give him a chance to show off his wealth. He never eats at the same restaurant twice, for a pattern would give him away and offer his enemies a chance to do him harm. He has had plenty of one-night stands, with an agent or two standing by just in case his partner becomes clingy and needs to be quietly disposed of. He has so many pairs of shoes that none of them show signs of wear.

No, he has no use for those petty things called emotions. He knows how to manipulate them, yes, and how to use them to bend others to his will. But does he care about love? No, he does not.

Giovanni is not a sentimental man.

So, why does he offer to marry Delia?

She is not ravishingly beautiful – he has his choice of dozens of buxom heiresses, traditional and otherwise, with much more exotic hair and eyes. She is not brilliantly intelligent – if he wanted that, there are dozens of intelligent young women who run the secrets of his underground empire with flawless skill. She is not even a brainless, submissive, and obedient doll he could use and then throw away.

Giovanni does not know precisely what attracts her to him.

However, he does know that he wants her, and whatever he wants, he gets, so she will never get away from him now.

And Delia does not know any of this, or perhaps, she simply does not care being his, for as long as he wants her.

For, Delia may be a sentimental woman.
