            “I love summer!”

Lance chuckled as she ran a hand through Red’s messy bangs, feeling him relax into her hug. That was not a romantic declaration, but she was glad he was happy.

He leaned back against her, yawning. It was a muggy summer evening, and cicadas were humming in the nearby trees. They were both barefoot, clad in shorts and t-shirts. Fashion was a lower priority in the mucky heat.

They had had sandwiches for dinner, peanut-butter and banana, with cool milk. Now, there was lemonade with lots of ice cubes that they could enjoy out on the porch. The sun was setting, and at last, the temperature was beginning to cool down.

He was being childish, perhaps, but why not let his inner child have some fun? No one was around, and vacation was for relaxing!

            She sipped her lemonade.

            “Let’s play tag!”

            Lance choked. “Are you sure?”

“I want to,” He giggled. “Or, we could do hide and seek.” They had only arrived at the rental house yesterday, and it had been late. Plus, they had already finished unpacking.

His wife put her glass down. “Well, why don’t you give me a few more minutes to digest, and then we can play whatever you want.” Some exercise would be nice, though it seemed forever since she had played any children’s games.

But if it was what he needed, she was happy to help.

Red cheered, and then gave her a hug. He was feeling better already.

Regression is an apparent return to a more juvenile way of thinking. It is another of Freud’s defense mechanisms.
