Freud described the consciousness and the unconscious mind as three parts. They are comprised of the Ego, the Superego, and the Id. The Id is the part that wishes for instant gratification. The Superego is what society demands, the person you would like to be, and the Ego is the compromise between the two.

Red wonders about that. He thinks that Destiny is the Id, because of how wanton his destruction can be. Destiny is also rash, and foolish, with the emotions of a mere child and enough power to corrupt a Saint. It is not a good combination.

Hope is the Superego, who keeps on wishing for the best, no matter how bleak the situation is. He is the self who never gives up, despite the shattered pasts or miserable presents. If Red were religious, he would call Hope his Guardian Angel, but that’s just weird, because split personalities aren’t quite that.

As for him, when he is himself as the Master of Hidden Shadows – he is the Ego who has to keep the balance. It is really quite taxing!

Balancing the line between sin and redemption, and vice and virtue, is not a job he would wish on anyone. Fortunately, no one has to know.

Now, he understands how Lance feels, too, because she has Crystal and Catelyn.

It is not easy being a Guardian, but only one who is Chosen can understand the pain of another Chosen One…

At least now Lance won’t be lonely, and Red holds her, and tries to ignore her shuddering breaths. It’s hard for Lance to balance, because Ice and Dragon are opposing elements, as are Steel and Darkness, but Red will try his best to help her, until their lives burn out. He will never leave his wife, his Eternal Mate.

And that is what love really is.
