Once upon a time, a little boy named Red left Pallet Town, because he wanted to be a Pokemon Master, like every other little boy (and many little girls) in the Kanto Region. Red had a rival named Blue, who got a Squirtle when Red got his Charmander, but Red never lost to Blue, ever.

Red journeyed all over the Kanto Region. He fought all the Gym Leaders and fought Team Rocket, and then he went on to fight the Elite Four. Of course, Red was very unhappy when he found out that Blue had beaten the Elite Four first, but Red beat Blue easily and became Champion!

And after that, Red went and completed the pokédex, fully ready to live happily ever after.

It didn’t quite happen that way.

Red’s girlfriend, Purple, broke up with him, and then Professor Oak, the nice man who had given him his pokédex, died of a heart attack, and when they were choosing a new Viridian City Gym Leader to replace Giovanni, who secretly ran Team Rocket, Blue got chosen instead.

            Red was very unhappy.

He didn’t know who to talk to, but since Lance was the closest, Red talked to him. Red started having tea (and a snack) with him every day, and he would tell him about how life was no fairy tale, about how his heart hurt now that Purple was gone and about how sometimes, being Champion just wasn’t worth it.

Lance listened, and he never interrupted, and he made delicious cookies once or twice a week. Red liked sitting in his room, holding a cup of tea in his hands.

Red soon discovered he liked Lance too.

It wasn’t as though Red liked boys, or men, but Lance was different! Lance was charming and sharp and had pretty hair and eyes, and he was a good trainer and he never teased him!

So Red wound up kissing him, and then he kissed back, and kissing led to other things – such as the fact that Lance was a girl.

She just grinned at his shocked expression, and he didn’t care at all.

This time, Red decided, he really was living happily ever after.
