“I can’t do it.” Steven told him, his dark and sorrowful. “Don’t ask this of me.” The pain was still too near.

“Do you have a crush on Sapphire or something?” Ruby asked with a frown, the invitation still in his hands. “It’s just a wedding, and I know it’s a bit odd holding it in December, but why can’t you come?”

He had not said another word, and Ruby had left, feeling strangely put down. This was all Sapphire’s fault! She knew the Champion better than he did!

Why couldn’t she have asked him?

Of course, the arrangements for the wedding had commenced in haste, and his fiancée’s new dress of fitted white silk showed off her slim curves wonderfully (since he had designed it himself), but for some reason, his mind continued to drift back to that refusal.

Why was it so important that Steven come to this ceremony?

Sapphire left a message on his PokeNav, but there was no reply. He was probably off digging for rare stones again.

“It’s too bad.” She said. “Winona and Wallace did agree to come though, right?”

He nodded. “They said they wouldn’t miss it for the world!”

Besides, maybe it wasn’t that important to have a big wedding.

Just, Steven had been really important in the battle of Houen too, so it was kind of a shame that he was missing this event.

Steven was already gone, on the first day of December, and as the days passed and he still did not appear, it seemed as though he would indeed miss their wedding. It carried on just the same, and when he returned on New Year’s Day, looking strangely depressed with dark shadows under his eyes, he was the first to congratulate Ruby.

            Huh, he sure was weird.

            Were rocks really that important?

But Wallace guessed the true reason, and he sighed, because there were still hurts that time had not healed.
