            Diamonds.

Red stared at the pile of them, entranced. They ranged in shade from a pale greenish-yellow to cool, icy white. He had never seen this much wealth before, and especially not pooled on his desk.

            It was… wonderful.

He felt rich and grown-up all of a sudden. Quietly, he picked a handful up, letting them clatter back onto the polished wood. It seemed like a dream, almost, and at any minute, he would wake up and still be living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Well, he never wanted to wake up then!

They were not all that expensive. Some were rhinestones and assorted semiprecious crystals, but he paid them little heed. They were beautiful.

“Enjoying the view?” Lance’s voice broke him from his concentration, and he grinned at his wife, ignoring the glints.

“I suppose Great-Aunt Elaine did have some use after all.” He turned to look at her. “I can’t believe she didn’t have any other relatives.”

This gift had to be heaven-sent, or he had just gotten a lot of stored-up luck!

Lance sat down next to him. “Well, now that you have this fortune, are you planning to retire?”

“I think I would find it very restful.” Red said wistfully. Six years of playing Champion had burned him out. Even at his young age, retirement was looking better and better.

She shrugged, careful not to jostle the gems. “Would you like some company, when you leave?”

“Of course, silly. I would never strand you here alone.” He said, before kissing her. “Never, ever…”

His wife just smirked when they pulled apart to breathe. “I’m glad to hear it.”

“Do you know how much these are worth?” He asked.

“I can find out,” She slipped a hand into his, not wanting him to get his hopes up. “They are lovely.”

            He beamed.
