It had been inevitable. The dice couldn’t roll snake eyes all the time, and though they had stacked the deck, even a stacked deck could cause a loss.

It was one of the new ones from the Shinou region… Darkrai, he thought it was called. Now, his love lay dead, killed by one under his control.

Lance’s lips curved up in a silent snarl as he walked through the tall grass, seeking his prey. There…

He struck, the dragon blades in his hands sinking deep into misty flesh. The pokémon howled in pain, but the strikes were mortal and he knew it.

He watched as life drained from its eyes, carefully cleaning his weapons of choice as he watched Serebii fade into view with a displeased expression on her face.

“You know why I did it.”

“A life for a life.” She agreed. “And now, your life is forfeit.”

“At least I’ll see him again,” Lance parried, even as life drained from his eyes.

Serebii watched as his spirit flew to join his love. Why must feelings be so complicated? At least the prophecy still held, fragile as it was…

And she was happy for them, truly.

Lance held Red close, as they watched the timelines spin out, before the next rebirth called, and Red smiled.
