            “Hakuryuu, use Attract!”

Lance’s Dragonair curled prettily, as a wave of sparkling mist surrounded her. The opponent’s Seel froze in place, immobilized by a circle of hearts that began to spiral in increasing frequency around his head.

“No! Seel!” Red cried. “Snap out of it!”

Lance grinned. “That’ll do it, love. Hakai Beam!”

A Hyper Beam attack slammed into the Seel, and he collapsed, as Red sighed, recalling his pokémon.

“Is something wrong?” Lance asked him, as they healed their pokémon after the practice battle.

“Sometimes I wonder how I even managed to defeat you.” Red blinked. “When did you teach your Dragonair attract?”

“Oh, a while ago. I just didn’t happen to use that particular move in my deciding battle against you.”

            “That explains it.”

“You were also using different pokémon, ne? Not a few you wanted to level up, but your best team.”

            “I suppose you’re right…”

“No battles today.” Lorelei called. “We’re free for the next three weeks, actually.”

            “Oh? Any reason why?”

“It seems that high and mighty President Goodman is finally getting married, so all League functions will circulate around his impeding nuptials.”

“Ahh…” Red mimed a gagging motion, and then retrieved his poke balls. “At least we get a vacation!”

“Yes.” Bruno yawned. “I’m heading off to the mountains to train.”

            “See ya.”

Red and Lance went out to get lunch afterwards, glad of a break. They sat on a park bench and ate sandwiches, enjoying the nice weather and the empty park.

“I don’t really understand what the point of love is.”

Lance smirked. “According to psychology, people fall in love because it feels good.”

            “It feels nice?”

“It fills your brain with chemicals – the same chemicals that would be present if you were constantly drugged up on cocaine.”

“Oh… so you’re high and not thinking clearly.”

            “Mm.” Lance nodded.

Red took another bite of his sandwich. “It might be nice though.”

            “True.”

“Have you ever been in love?”

Lance almost choked. “What makes you ask that question?”

“You seem to know a lot more than I do about it!”

“Ah.” Lance swallowed with some difficulty, before he leaned back, closing his eyes. “I have not really been in love, no.”

            “Well….”

“You seem to have a suggestion to make.”

“Yes.” Red nodded. “Why don’t we pretend to be in love?”

The Dragon Master’s eyes shot open as he stared at the Champion. “W-What?”

“It’ll be fun! I mean, we’re friends already, and it sounds nice, so why don’t we try it?” He continued innocently.

Lance coughed. “… Well, I suppose it couldn’t hurt?”

“Great!” Red bounced into his lap and hugged him, and Lance awkwardly patted him on the head.

Human contact was… different, but Red was warm and cuddly, like a teddy bear.

This might be fun after all.

Red snuggled into Lance’s arms, realizing that Lance was nice to hug. It made him feel better already, and for a few minutes they sat there in silence, lost in thought.

That was when Lance kissed him.

He almost – almost melted, but not quite. He settled for blinking, as Lance pulled away.

“Was that nice?”, Lance asked, sounding a bit dazed.

“Yes.” Red grinned. “Can we do it again?”

            “Sure.”

            And they did.
