Bernard looked up as two kids entered his store, the bell on the glass doors tinkling in welcome. The younger boy was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, and was jabbering in a language he could not understand, peering at everything through his thick, coke-bottle glasses. He looked fascinated by the display of pastries. The older one was neatly dressed in slacks and a shirt, and kept pointing at something in his book. Bernard recognized it as a cheap phrasebook, and sighed.

            Foreigners.

“Excuse me,” The older one said, in badly accented English, “You have toast of butter and jam, yes?”

Bernard coughed. “You mean buttered toast with jam? I do have those types of sandwiches, yes.”

The younger one nodded excitedly, still talking a mile a minute.

“Well, yes. How many slices would you like?”

The boy held up four fingers, and began digging in his wallet for money while Bernard wrapped up four sandwiches and rang up the teller. They paid easily enough, and he waved goodbye as he watched them leave. Strange kids.

“That was brilliant, Lance! He didn’t even recognize us.” Red grinned.

Lance shrugged. “Not sure if the trick will work next time though. Are you sure you like these types of sandwiches?”

“Positive.” Red grinned brightly as he pecked Lance on the cheek. “Now let’s go find a spot to eat before everything gets taken.”

The park was rather crowded, so they found a solitary spot inside a copse of trees, most likely abandoned because of the chirping Pidgeys perched in the canopy above.

Red rather liked the sound of it, and as he and Lance ate lunch quietly, there was no one to bother them.

For once, the Champions could enjoy their time in peace, safe from the hordes of fangirls, who were most likely still keeping watch outside Indigo Plateau, waiting for them to emerge.

Having Bruno dig an exit tunnel was a stroke of pure genius.

For now, they were alone, and happy with it.

I assume ‘Store’, as in the building, yes…
