“I don’t understand.” Red whispered. “Why did she do it?”

Lance did not reply, as they stood next to the coffin. Inside, the body rested, eyes closed.

“No one knows why she chose that path, Red. But I do not think you should dwell on it too much.”

“She was my friend!”

“Yes, but wasting your life away mourning her is hardly an enviable fate.”

Red swallowed, before wiping at his eyes roughly. “I’ll miss her, but… you’re right. She wouldn’t want us to angst for the rest of our lives.”

Lance slowly led Red away, and his lover brooked no protest.

In the graveyard behind them, a single tombstone glittered, a monument to a lost soul.

Rest in Peace, Phantomness.
