Chapter 2

“Look, there’s nothing here.” Bruno said. They had been searching Whirl Islands for two weeks, to no avail. “Sea, Land, Air, we’ve checked them all! We might as well just give up!”

Ash watched as Lance’s expression slid into something deadly. His golden eyes glittered as he lunged forwards and lifted Bruno into the air by the neck, an impressive feat since Bruno must have weighed at least two hundred pounds more. “You are going to condemn them to death then?”

“Condemn, who to death?” Bruno gagged. “You’re insane, Lance! The prophecy probably wasn’t even real! Lugia doesn’t exist!”

Lance dropped Bruno unceremoniously. “It’s your fault!”

            “Huh?”

“You have no faith! Lugia only shows himself to those who believe!”

“Lance…” Lorelei laid a hand on her cousin’s arm. “Don’t…”

Lance seemed to have taken no notice of Lorelei’s words. “We’ll have to try the second prophecy then, won’t we?”

            “Lance!”

            “What’s wrong with him?”

“If I knew, would I be having this problem?” Lorelei sighed. “Great, just great…”

            “Is he… insane?” Ash whispered.

“Well, I certainly hope not. Maybe its just stress.”

Lance’s eyes refocused as he sighed. “Perhaps it is true that we shall all die here… there’s almost no time left…”

“Lance, it’s all right.” Lorelei said soothingly. “Everyone’s stressed.”

            “I know… so only Lugia can save us… it’s a pity, but…”

Ash turned around, not wanting to eavesdrop further…

He turned around again when he heard a cry of surprise. “Lance, what do you think you’re doing?”

Ash’s eyes widened. Lance was… well, he wasn’t quite sure what he was doing, but it looked like he was bleeding…

“Please…” Lance whispered, before he slumped forwards. “Please…”

“What do you think you’re doing?” Lorelei demanded. “Suicide is not the answer, Lance! I don’t care how depressed you feel!”

            Drip, drip, drip…

An anguished howl split the air as a pokemon appeared in midair, water falling off bright wings…

“Is that Lugia?” Bruno asked, staring.

            “I…” Lorelei’s jaw dropped, “I think so…”

Lugia made another sweeping dive and suddenly flew towards them. Ash gulped. Was this… what would happen now?

< Ah, my Dragon Master… you are too foolish for your own good… >

Lance smiled weakly. < I had a hunch that this would work… it was my last resort, Lugia-san. I can’t just let the pokemon die! >

< Oh, I know that well, foolish child. Sleep now, or your body will not heal…. No. This is too serious. Change. >

            < Must I? >

            < Do it. >

Lance looked ill, but nodded and pressed the stone on the ring, before she sighed. At least the injury was gone…

Ash stared. * Recover? Softboiled? He can heal himself? *

            Lugia nodded. < I’ll do it… >

And there was a brilliant flash of light before everything froze, but when time snapped back into place everything was fine now…

And then Ash’s phone rang and it was the space director in Mossdeep and he babbled on about everything being fine…

But he still had a sinking suspicion that it wasn’t that easy…

            “Lance, what did you do?”

“Can we not talk about this?”

“No.” Ash put his hands on his hips. “As your superior, I demand to know what you did.”

The Dragon Master smiled wryly. “Odd time to pick to exert your leadership but you’re correct, Champion-sama. What would you like to know?”

Ash twitched a little at the formal tone, but plowed on. “Well, what did you do? Try to kill yourself?”

            “Yes.”

            “Why on earth…”

“It got Lugia out, didn’t it, Champion-sama?”

“Well yes, but still! That was awfully careless of you!”

            “Calculated risks, Champion-sama…”

“Would you quit calling me that?”

            “Do you deny it, Champion-sama?”

“Argh!” Why was Lance being so irritating today? He normally got along well with the Dragon Master – they didn’t really talk except in official capacity, but now…

Ash’s temper flared. “You’ll tell me or else I’ll!”

“My, my… you’re being quite unreasonable today, Champion-sama…” Lance smiled as she crossed her legs. “I wonder why?”

Ash groaned. “You’re horrible. I guess I’ll just have to force the answer out of you then… Charizard, go!”

Lance snapped her fingers and her Gyarados twined his body protectively around her. “I don’t think so, Champion-sama.”

            “Look, it’s not that hard…”

“Why do I owe you an explanation? I just saved the bloody world, for crying out loud! Isn’t that enough? Perhaps I should have-!”

Ash watched as Lance began to fidget with… a ring on his finger? Yes, he remembered it – wait. Lance’s ring had a red stone, but this one was blue… hmm…
            “You’re not Lance, are you!”

Lance raised an eyebrow, before Ash suddenly lunged forwards and…

“Please remove your hands from me now…”

Ash hurriedly did so, flushing. “Er... Lance… you’re a girl?”

            “Regrettably, yes.”

            “Regrettably? Why?”

Lance shrugged, as Gyarados began to hiss at Ash. “Nothing important. If you’re a boy, you don’t have to deal with marriage proposals from rich old men.”

            “…”

            “Don’t do that again.”

“I won’t!” But damn, Lance was hot… now that he knew she was a girl… she was awfully cute… ack, bad thoughts!

            “So, why did you

            “To summon Lugia.”

            “That’s still not an answer…”

“You’re not getting anything else out of me.” Lance said firmly as she recalled her Gyarados and prepared to leave the room.
