Chapter 3

The next morning, he ran into Lance.

He felt on edge, but also, oddly comfortable being in the other trainer’s presence.

"Morning, Red." Lance said quietly. "How have you been?"

At that, Red just broke down. He just couldn't stand it anymore. His life was nothing but a mess!

He was ready to collapse.

Lance pulled him into an awkward hug. "Red?"

Red just clutched him. Something felt like it had clicked into place for him... Like being with Lance felt good, like a part of himself that had been lost had been found...

Lance blinked. "Red?"

The boy was clutching him like a lifeline, like he never wanted to let go. His shoulders were trembling.

The Dragon Master scooped him up, and teleported the two of them back to his quarters in the Plateau.

When Red finally looked up at him there were tears in his eyes.

Lance blinked. “Red, are you all right?”

"No, I'm not..."

Frowning, he tried to pull away, but the trainer had a surprisingly tight grip on him.

“What are you doing?”

Red looked up at him. Part of him was screaming that this was the one that hurt him, but the other half...

"Please." It was almost a sob. He wound his arms tightly around Lance's waist.

Lance blinked.

“I'll leave if you don't want me, Red.”

He shook his head. Was this what Sabrina had meant about destiny? That he was supposed to be with Lance?

He just wanted to be held...

Lance slowly stroked Red's dark hair.

The crimson-eyed boy purred in contentment.

The Elite Four member didn't understand. Red had been seeing lots of other people. Why had he come to him? He wasn't sure he wanted to ask. Was he just another bead in Red's string of lovers?

He shook his head. Some things were better left unspoken. Besides, Red would never want him that way.

When Red looked up at him again there was a twinge of gold in his eyes...

The older trainer stopped his petting. This was... arousing. That was not good.

< …Mate? > The voice was small and Lance almost didn't hear it.

His eyes flashed golden-blue as he turned to stare at Red. Impossible!

Red seemed to reach out to him.

Lance shuddered.

< Mate. > Red's voice sounded more confident now.

Lance backed away. How had he remembered? He wasn’t supposed to, not now.

Red purred. His Mate. He nuzzled Lance, kissed him.

The Leader frowned, not sure if he should respond or not. What if Red remembered? He'd just get broken again.

Panicked, the Elite trainer just stood there, frozen.

Red kissed Lance again. < My Mate. > Now Lance was the one trembling.

< N-No. > He shook his head. < I'm not... >

< You are! >

< No I'm not. >

Red's eyes narrowed slightly.

< You have others now. Better than me. >

< I felt nothing, nothing with any of them! > The boy frowned. < I slept with so many people, Lance. I admit it. But none of them moved me! >

< What if I'm just another one-night stand then? >

Red shook his head. < I feel something... That's how I know it's not. > He closed his eyes. < When I’m with you, I feel complete. >

< Charlotte would be better for you. >

He opened his eyes again, shaking his head. < I don't want Aneki! I want you! >

< You were staying away from me! I hurt you! You should have kept doing that! You should have never come to me! >

Red started protesting more forcefully. < My heart can't take being away from you anymore, Aniki. >

< Why? I'll only hurt you. >

He kept shaking his head. < I'd be lost without you, Aniki... >

Lance blinked. < Lost? >

< Yes... Lost. > Red clung to Lance. < I was drinking and having sex with strangers every night! I need you, Aniki! >

For a moment, the Dragon Master was stunned speechless. Did the Thunder Guardian really need him that much?

Was there more to their relationship than just a quick lay?

< But none of it helped... > He sniffled.

< Why not? Surely… >

< You're the only one I want. > Red panted. < The one I need… >

Lance cuddled Red close. < I see. >

He leaned into the older trainer. It felt right. He belonged here.

< What if I hurt you again? Will you leave for good? >

< I'll always find my way back to you. > Red murmured.

< But why do you come back? >

< You are the other half of me, my love. > Red flushed. < And I've hurt you too. The blame is not yours alone. >

Lance stared down at Red.

Red met his gaze. < I have. I’ve broken you so many times. > He frowned.

< Well yes, but... >

< But what? It doesn’t make any difference!  >

The younger Guardian kissed him timidly. < Don't deny it, love. And please... don't put yourself down. >

< All right. >

For now, he just wanted to stay with his Mate.
