Chapter 2

He wonders why it hasn’t happened yet.

Clair’s happy now, with that other boy, Drake, who has Dragonite as his form and it’s very odd to see them cuddled together in dragon form. It’s also irritating because Clair’s his little sister and something about Drake just rubs him the wrong way. But he doesn’t need to see them much, because he lives alone – almost.

Two Dragonair have joined him. He doesn’t mind. Their company is infinitely preferable to human company. But he still can’t take dragon form.

They said that sometimes it takes emotions, like love, but he doesn’t feel love for anyone, not really…

If that’s why he can’t change, it’s a horrible way of doing things.

He doesn’t want to love anyone, especially not another human… but it doesn’t seem as if he has a choice.

            Maybe he could fake it?

Then the best place to find someone was probably at a public school…

Lance tried to remember school, but he couldn’t, it’d been a long while since he had last gone. Well, he’d just have to fake it then…

Surely things couldn’t have changed that much? He hoped so at least…

            He yawned…

            Master?

            “What is it, Hakuryuu?”

You can’t force yourself to fall in love…

            “Oh? Are you quite certain?”

            Well no, but…

“It doesn’t matter. I’ll find a way. Nothing is going to keep me from my true potential.”

The two Dragonair looked at each other and sighed inwardly… this would be a problem… especially if he didn’t know about human life now…

Lance found that school was not especially difficult, as the education system in Kanto was certainly far from world class, which was why most parents sent their children off to elite private schools…

            Ah well, it mattered little…

He would get better! He would! And then… and then everything would be all right… because he’d learn how to control his power and make everything all right.

            “Lance?”

            “What is it?”

            “I’m tired…”

            “I know… shh…”

His classmate was rather adorable… adorably shy, just a child, almost, despite his age...

Innocent. It was hard to find innocent people nowadays.

What would the churchmen have thought of society now, he wondered?

            Dragons are the devil’s creations…

That’s why they burned him? Perhaps. But if they hadn’t, they would never have awoken his dragon’s blood…

Dragons live for a thousand years – of course, it hadn’t been a thousand, not even half that, but it was still fascinating how times changed…

            It didn’t matter though.

            “Lance?”

            “What is it now, Ash?”

“Can you help me with this geometry problem?”

            “Of course…”

            He liked his friend…

Pity he didn’t know what darkness lurked beneath a surface. Eyes mirror-bright held many secrets…

            Pity…

Well, it mattered little… if one faked love, would it turn out to be real, like faking confidence? It was worth a try. But not yet…

            Ash was still too young…

Technically, no, but his mind was that of a child, and a child’s mind can easily be broken – much too easily broken.

I want someone who can stand the truth.

            He’s too fragile right now.

Lance had red hair that stood out like a bonfire and strange golden eyes, but it fit. He didn’t care if the other kids stayed away from his new friend. It wasn’t like Lance was dangerous or anything, just quiet!

            He was smart too.

“Let’s do our homework at my house.”

            “Ash…”

“Come on, I know you’re an orphan, and I know you probably don’t want to go back to the orphanage. And mom won’t mind!”

            “… All right.”

Yes, he’d had to play the part of an orphan with amnesia – hardly an uncommon circumstance in a world wracked by pokemon that were often vicious. And shock did do strange things to people…

He didn’t have much, just a few sets of clothing and his stuffed Dratini and his school supplies. His real equipment was safe in Whirl Islands – his weapons and poisons and scrolls and spells and magics….

Those were much more important and he didn’t want anyone getting into them…

They’d probably die if they tried.

Ash was so busy talking as they walked home that he didn’t notice he’d stepped on an Ekans until after it bit him.

            “Ow!”

Lance groaned as Ash began turning a pasty color. “… This is not good.” His friend’s eyes began to glaze over, so he decided to forego modesty and all that for now. It wasn’t as if he carried Antidote and he couldn’t heal anymore, not anymore…

There was only one thing to do then. Even with his dragons, they wouldn’t get to the Center in time, and moving a victim would only accelerate the venom flow… and Ekans venom killed in seconds!

He yanked Ash’s jeans down, never mind what the implications might be later, and used his sharp nails to slice through skin, forming X marks across the bitten flesh, and then his fangs sank into the wound, seeking, drawing out blood and poison…

Ash whimpered for several long moments – it seemed an eternity, but Lance finally spat the purple slime out of his mouth and looked at his friend. “Better?”

At least Ash had stopped shivering…

Ash nodded shakily. “I… I’ll probably need to get a bandage or something…”

“I’ll carry you to the Pokemon Center.”

            “Okay!”

So Lance piggybacked him as they walked to the Viridian Pokemon Center, and then Nurse Joy took one look at him and shot him full of Antidotes, and he had to spend the night there, but at least he wasn’t dead and there was no permanent damage done…

            Good.
