Chapter 2: Match

Place. Indigo League HQ, Indigo Plateau

Ash waited in line behind all the other eager trainers, vying for the position as Grand Champion of the League.

Most of them were pathetic-looking, with only two or three badges. Well, if no qualifications were needed to enter, it was just more time-consuming.

He sighed and waited. The form, neatly filled out in black pen, waited in his hands.

Name? Red Satoshi. Code name, at least the Satoshi part of it, he wasn’t stupid enough to use his real name, in case they traced him back to Team Rocket.

            Age? Twelve.

            Sex? Male.

The next questions dealt with criminal history (None – no TR connection anywhere), medical history (no, he had no problems battling, no heart conditions, no rare blood disorders), and experience level.

Ash penciled in ‘8 badges’. It was true enough, he had the badges as proof in his room.

It was fun. Now, he just needed to wait for them to grid all the battles. Lots of trainers though, but he wasn’t worried.

            Not at all…

His purple eyes gleamed happily. Battling was always exciting, and hopefully some of the trainers would be good.

His first match was against a Hiker.

It was pathetic, really. It was like Brock’s gym. Three gravelers? Ask Poliwrath to slow down. Then, the Onix, well, Earthquake couldn’t hit if he and Aerodactyl were up in the air, could it?

Hyper beam to the head, well, decapitation can slow down someone. The machop? Wing attack.

The last pokemon was actually a little more difficult. It was another Aerodactyl. Female.

            Unfortunately… attract didn’t work.

The female looked confused, before Ash’s Aerodactyl spat out another Hyper beam, with Supersonic waves mixed in.

            Finale.

            “And the Red trainer wins!”

It was quite simple. All he had to do was wait. Giovanni had chosen a good mission for him.

Humming, Ash ordered a soda from the refreshments counter and watched a few other battles.

The flaws of some were sadly obvious. If he fought them, he would know exactly how to win.

Adaptation was a vital trainer trait; pity most didn’t have it.

He didn’t know someone else was watching him.

“Promising trainer.” Lorelei remarked. “What do you think?”

“One battle can’t prove much.” Bruno grunted.

“Well, it’s interesting.” Agatha said, musingly. “He’s a psychic.”

            “He is?”

            “I can tell these things.”

Red brushed back his hair and took out a manga to read. Hopefully, his next battle would be soon.

Fifteen minutes later, there was another round.

Jim was almost thirty years old and still had never won, proof of his horrific training skills.

            “Go! Rattata!”

Umbreon yawned, Confuse Ray. Then, follow up with Faint Attack. You can hit it, but it can’t hit you!

            He flipped his ears arrogantly.

            “Go! Raticate!”

            Boring… Umbreon muttered. Bite.

            No better.

This time, Jim pulled out an Alakazam. It used psychic, and absolutely nothing happened.

< Idiot! Psy moves don’t hurt dark types! >

Ash shrugged as Umbreon knocked out Alakazam with Bite as well. < Good work. >

            < Thank you, Master. >

Jim started to sweat. This was not good…

            “All right, Squirtle, Hydro Pump!”

The area flooded with water. When the water drained away, Jim was surprised to see Ash unharmed, Umbreon having been swapped for Gyarados.

            “Hyper Beam.”

With pleasure…Gyarados growled, sending Squirtle flying out of the ring.

            Next.

            “Fine! Electrode, Explosion!”

            Electrode exploded, certainly, but…

Gyarados wasn’t down yet. Its hard scales proved a good defense.

“The blue trainer Jim is down to one pokemon!” Shouted the referee.

            “Victreebel, go!”

Gyarados and Red flew into the air, out of reach of the plant’s vines.

            “Ice Beam.”

            Easily.

And thus, the second match ended as well.

            “Not bad at all.”

“But Jim was a horrible Trainer.” Bruno interjected.

“Then we’ll wait for him to find a worthier opponent.”
