Chapter 3

“The girl I loved died a long time ago.” Lance said quietly. “There is no point in continuing this charade.”

"No.” Red shook her head. “She was killed in her sleep."

Lance slanted a sideways look at her. "Really."

Red nodded. "Yes. By the same man who gave her this!" She held up the cursed necklace. Light glinted off its silvery surface.

“So that is how the story ended...” The Prince mused.

“He wanted us both gone.”

“I suppose he did not love the Princess.”

“I suppose he wanted the kingdom for himself...” Red looked up at him.

“It is quite a sad story.” Lance conceded, but his tone spoke otherwise.

Red was about to respond, when she heard someone calling her.

"Red!" It was Charlotte.

Lance faded away as her sister opened the door.

Red blushed. "Oh, sorry, Aneki."

"The phone is for you."

She took the phone. "Hello?"

“Red, we need you back here!” It was President Goodman.

Red sighed. "But I've only been on vacation for two days!"

There was an explosion in the background. The Champion winced.

"Ok, I'll be right there." Red wanted to cry. She hadn't been able to work through everything...

She grabbed her poke balls. The Plateau sounded like it was under attack! Red rode Flygon this time, since she was the fastest on the team...

When she got there, she found Team Rocket Grunts everywhere. After a harrowing six hours, they managed to round up all the Grunts.

Red sighed. But they missed one!

The man cackled as he threw a Voltorb at her, yelling out an order for Self-Destruct. Red's eyes widened, just as Lance faded into view in front of her. A shimmering blue shield surrounded them both as the pokemon exploded.

Lance growled. He'd done his best to hide it but he couldn't bear to see her hurt!

Red stared as he vanished again.

"H-He saved me, saved my life…” She slid to her knees. "Even after he said that I wasn’t pure any more…"

Bruno and Agatha came running up. "Red! Are you all right?"

“No, I'm not okay. I'm so confused.”

Agatha checked her over. "Just a few scrapes and bruises."

Red blinked and looked up. Goodman was coming this way. Now that she thought of it, he reminded her of Barry!

She glared. He had done this to them! How could she ever have seen anything in him? A worthless, traitorous Guard was no match for her Prince!

Goodman's grin broadened when he saw her wearing the necklace. Now she would love him and hate Lance!

Her sweet body was his!

Oh, how he would enjoy the delights of her flesh. Tonight, and every other night! He could hardly wait!

Red smirked. “I don't love you.”

"What?"

She shook her head. “I've never loved you, 'Barry'…”

"B-But..." He spluttered.

“Why would I? I'm in love with someone else.” She swallowed. “Someone I don't deserve…”

"You slept with me!" The man blustered.

"Not in this life."

"It doesn't matter!" Goodman scowled. "The Prince will never want you now."

“Maybe. But my heart belongs to him…”

Enraged, President Goodman lunged towards her.

Red frowned, but that was when Lance appeared. His eyes were flashing red. < Traitor... >

Red didn't care.

The obese President backed up a step, paling.

“You forgot the necklace you gave me would hold his soul.” She smirked.

< You swore your fealty false. > Lance purred. And as he spoke, his form was becoming less human, and more draconic.

Red remembered why she loved Lance so much... She watched as he lunged forwards and tore a chunk out of the man's shoulder.

Goodman screamed.

Red knew Lance wouldn't want to touch her again. But she couldn't look away as he ripped Goodman to pieces.

Barry deserved every bit of this punishment!

The former Princess smiled.

Lance frowned and turned to Red.

The Champion watched him, while biting her lip.

< Why didn't you stop me? > He asked, curious.

< Because I spoke the truth. My heart really does belong to you, even if you refuse to touch me…> Red refused to look away.

< Do you truly love me? >

< Yes. >

Lance bent down and kissed her, chastely, as his body began to dissolve into sparkles.

Red blinked as she kissed back.

< I will miss you, my love... > Lance whispered. < I hope to see you again. >

Red began to cry as he dissolved completely. < And I you... My Prince. >

She didn’t know why this was happening. Shouldn’t they – couldn’t they be happy together? She sniffed.

Or were they doomed?

Yes, it is angsty, isn’t it! *Sobbing*

Fortunately, I believe things will be resolved in the next chapter. Don’t give up!

As to whether I myself wear jewelry, aside from my crucifix and watch, no. rings are impractical, and bracelets get caught on the tight-sleeved jackets and shirts I like to wear. *Shrug* Plus, dangling necklaces and earrings are a lab hazard.
