Chapter 1

It was a cold, rainy night. Lance tucked his white trench coat more tightly around his body as he shuffled through the rain, glaring at the weather. Luckily his clothing was waterproof, wasn’t it?

Indigo Plateau was really a nice city. However, there had been incidents of several robberies in this area, so the council had sent him here to check it out, instead of contacting the local police station. Their argument was that a real live person dealing with the situation would be better than the Officer Jenny cyber-bots they had built.

It was true. Jennies were fine with small, petty crimes, but not sophisticated murders… those were beyond the programs they had so far.

            There!

He felt the knives flare into existence beneath his fingertips as he smiled. They would be in for an unpleasant surprise if they thought they could rob him…

Electricity crackled through three prone figures as Lance smirked, got them… wait a second…

What the... it was two boys in Indigo High school uniforms and a girl in a bikini? What on earth?

No, that wasn’t a girl. Her little yellow fox-shaped ears proved it. So. Two boys and a persocom…

He retracted and retrieved his throwing knives, made sure the area was secure before he administered the antidote. “What are you doing out after curfew and why did you try to attack me?”

“I’m sorry!” The taller teen, the one with black spiky hair and squinty eyes said. “I was just helping my friend carry his persocom home since it broke down, and you looked scary!”

Lance sighed. “I see.” They didn’t seem to be lying. “Well, next time, be more careful.” With that, he took off, jumping onto another rooftop and heading for home. He could check the situation out later.

Clair, Sabrina, Karen, and Lorelei looked up when Lance entered. They had been playing Mahjong, so were therefore distracted. They were all dressed in matching jackets and skirts – Black for Karen, purple for Sabrina, blue for Clair, and red for Lorelei.

“Welcome home, Master.” The four persocoms chimed.

Lance nodded. “At ease, you four. Did any new information come in?”

There was a pause, before Karen spoke. “Nothing.”

“I thought as much. Honestly, I don’t think someone causes it at all. I suspect a specialized virus….”

            “A virus?”

Lance nodded grimly. “ A virus. Remember how there were never any witnesses except the persocoms?”

“But don’t all persocoms have truth software installed?”

“Technically speaking, yes…” Lance said, “But I think that some have found a way to circumvent it, perhaps not of their own volition. Even so…” He smirked as the energy blades materialized in his fingertips, “We’ll find out soon enough.”

Laughter echoed through the house as the rain continued to poor down outside…

“Phew, I’m glad we got away unscathed, relatively.” Brock said, helping Gary carry the persocom the boy had found dumped in the trash back to his apartment. “Have fun with her.”

With that, Brock headed out the door with a goodbye wave and opened the door to his own apartment down the hall. He smiled as he felt a hand on his shoulder.

            “Hello, Suzie.”

The persocom smiled. “Hello Master! Welcome home!”

“Gary’s got himself a new persocom too. Isn’t he lucky?”

            “Master happy?”

“Yes.” Brock patted Suzie on the head. “I’m happy for him. I’m glad to see you too.” Suzie had a pair of red fox ears and a little tail, but other than that, looked human. Brock kept her dressed in casual jeans and t-shirts.

Gary huffed as he closed the door to his apartment and set the persocom on the floor. At least it had come with clothes. He wasn’t sure he could afford them.

Now where was the ‘on switch?

Gary searched over her body, even opened her ears to access the cables inside, but there was nothing visible. This was bad. How was he supposed to work this persocom without an on switch?

            Let’s see…

He’d already checked her arms and legs. Several models had cables on the backs of their necks, but…

Gary’s eyes widened as he involuntarily looked down. No. It couldn’t be. No one was that perverted!

Then again, why not have a switch there? It was only a robot, a machine like a toaster or a microwave…

Taking a deep breath, he reached out a hand between its legs…

There was a slight ‘click’ and the machine whirred to life. Blue eyes opened blankly as the persocom opened her mouth.

            “Misty?”

“It worked!” Gary grinned broadly. “Now then… to get you hooked up so I can actually use you. Finally, my luck is starting to change!”

The girl blinked at him, then smiled.

She did have an awfully cute smile…

“So, what’s your name?” Gary asked, trying to break the silence and quell his rampant blush.

“Misty?” The girl asked, cocking her head.

“Misty? Well, that’s a nice name. Now let’s see what we can do with you…” Taking out a cable from his television set, Gary attached it to the port in Misty’s ear.

“According to this, your specifications should display on the screen now.” Gary said, flipping through his manual.

            He waited with breathless anticipation.

The screen flashed, than the words NO DATA appeared in green ink. Gary gaped. “No data?”

The book was clear enough. It stated that if no data displayed software and perhaps even an operating would need to be purchased. Gary groaned.

“I’m broke! Why else would I have gotten my persocom from the trash? Argh, this isn’t fair…”

He had a job that barely managed to pay his rent and food, and now he had to get software for his new persocom too?

            Maybe Brock could help, later…

For now, Gary decided, as he looked at his new persocom, he’d just have to wait.

“Misty?” She tilted her head to the side.

He had to admit she was awfully cute though…
