Chapter 3

His senses erupted in pain as metal sliced cleanly through flesh and bone, dark blood spurting from the wound, staining his white jacket. “… Why?” He whispered.

“Because you took what was rightfully mine. And because you are an enemy to our clan.” Justin smiled.

            “I never… touched her…” He gasped.

“Liar! You were embracing her even after she became my fiancée!”

            “It… wasn’t…”

“And still you lie. Well, I’ll be able to shut that mouth of yours once and for all.” Justin said gleefully. He paused. “Hmm, I’d better clean this…” And attempted to yank the sword back out of Wataru’s chest.

            It wouldn’t budge.

Justin blinked, watching… what was going on? Wataru had one hand wrapped around the blade…

“Look, if you’re thinking to take this to your grave with you as some sort of revenge, I don’t think that’ll work. Now let go!”

The blade still wouldn’t budge. His hair was starting to turn red from all the blood…white bleeding crimson…

Justin snarled and attempted to slap him away. It didn’t work.

            “Key… that hides…” Wataru murmured, barely a whisper… “The power of… the darkness…”

“What? What are you saying? Speak up, man! Some last words of love to Clair, maybe?” Justin taunted.

“Show… thy true form… before me…” He whispered. Justin gripped Wataru’s hair in his hand, ignoring the blood.

“Shut up or speak up! It’s not making you die any faster! Why won’t you just die, you worthless worm!”

Clair frowned. Something seemed off. However, as her Grandfather had bound her up with ice ropes, she couldn’t move.

Stupid old man! There might still be time to save Wataru!

            “Let me go!”

“Don’t worry, child, it will be over soon!”

“Your master… under the seal of contract….” He choked, coughing out blood. Justin shook his head mock-pityingly.

“Heh, I figured you wouldn’t be able to talk, what with your lungs – I think I punctured one of em? You didn’t really think you’d be able to get away with stealing Clair away from me did you?”

His vision was blurring, but he had to finish, had to know… had to… “Lance commandeth you…”

Weakly, ever so weakly, a magic circle, silver and blue, a hint of gold, followed by blood red and night-black, began to form beneath his feet…

Justin finally sensed something amiss. “Clair! You taught him magic? How could you betray us like this?”

“I never did!” Clair shouted. “I didn’t even tell him about my lessons!” What was going on? Wataru didn’t know magic, aside from healing pokemon!
            What was going on?

“Release!” The last word came out stronger than it ought to, a dying man should be gasping for breath by now, but…!

Justin screamed as he was caught in the whirlwind of magic that Wataru had somehow summoned. How?!

As he watched, the blade glowed, and shifted… becoming a staff, a glowing crescent moon in the center, silver, from the rim of the moon, spokes of gold and red, like the sun… between the two upturned horns of the moon, an eight-pointed star… the body of the staff itself was black, and encrusted along its length were rubies and sapphires set in silver and gold…

The end of the staff – almost six feet in length – tapered off into a wicked point, glinting steel…

Wataru himself had also undergone a startling transformation. His bloodstained hair was now glowing crimson, golden and silver with electrum streaks, falling to his waist… and his clothing….

Bloodstained rags had been replaced with fitting, almost medieval, armor, silversteel coiling over his torso and arms like a lover’s caress, stretching out to encompass wings, deadly as a Skarmory’s’…

Golden eyes snapped open, as his lips curved in a vicious smile, showing off his fangs. Almost instantly, the area around them darkened…

            “Let’s begin…”
