Chapter 6

Ash woke up the next morning, feeling strangely invigorated. However, he shrugged it off as having gotten a good night’s sleep and left it at that. Changing into a clean pair of jeans and a Charizard t-shirt after his shower, he headed out and checked his bearings. Let’s see he was in Lavender, so he ought to get to Saffron soon.

Then, he could buy a Magnet Train ticket, go to Johto, and hopefully get a pokedex there. Right. That would work.

            Hmm… wait a moment…

Ash’s eyes grinned as he regarded Exeggutor’s poke ball. Why not? It would change nothing…

Professor Elm was a bit surprised when a trainer landed on top of him while he was walking to his lab, but he was used to odd happenings.

“Hello, young man, what can I do for you?”

The boy sighed. “I need a pokédex.”

“Ah! Beginning trainer. Very well, there’s a flat fee of five hundred dollars for non-native New Bark residents.”

Ash inwardly groaned. He barely made enough money battling to get food, much less… heh…

            “Exeggutor, Hypnosis!”

Elm’s eyes glazed over as he quickly made Ash a pokédex and at the same time, gave him 6 poke balls and 2 potions.

“You will forget this.” The trainer intoned, after he had recalled his pokemon. “Sleep.”

Elm fell asleep and woke up five minutes later with no recollection of what had happened. With a shrug, he went back to work in his lab…

Ash flew towards Blackthorn on Dragonite, intending to seek out one of the fabled Dragon Clan. Apparently said pokemon was in heat, and thus, he was seeking to make some cash that way…

An old woman met him outside the pokemon center.

“Are you a member of the Dragon Clan?”

She shook her head. “The Clan was disbanded several months ago. The two heirs went separate places. I believe Justin headed to Kanto, and Clair to Houen.”

            “Oh…” Ash deflated. “I see.”

Just then, a vaguely familiar face appeared. “Grandmother Juliet!”

Juliet looked up. “My dear Justin!”

The blonde boy jumped off his Dragonite’s back and embraced his grandmother. He hadn’t been here in so long, as he was still trying to hunt Lance down…

“This young man wishes to speak to you.”

Ash gaped as recognition sparked. “You’re the guy who got trapped in an alley!”

Justin flushed angrily. “Yeah, so what?”

            “Well, um… I have a Dragonite…”

“You what? How on earth did you manage to capture it? I’ve been trying to find a mate for my Dragonite for months! Is it a male?”

            Ash nodded.

“Oh good! It’s mating season for them right now. Sure, I’ll pay you if your Dragonite wants to stud.”

            “Really? Thanks!”

            “No problem!”

Juliet smiled as she watched the two release their Dragonites, who immediately went into Dragon’s Den and got down to business.

            How interesting…

Justin looked a bit uncomfortable, “So, Ash, how old are you?”

The trainer blinked as he continued licking his chocolate ice pop. “Oh? I’m thirteen, why?”

“Just wondering. You look like a beginning trainer, but…”

“I am a beginning trainer.” Ash lied. “Dragonite is a present from grandfather.”

“Oh, how lucky…” Justin looked envious. Grandfather… well, his grandfather was dead, curse Lance for that! That bastard…

Ash continued to suck on his treat, not noticing how it was distracting Justin.

Justin groaned. * I am not gay, this is not turning me on… * Unfortunately, instinct and mind do not always work together…

He quickly averted his eyes and brought up an image of a Muk, successfully distracting his mind.

            Phew…

After he had finished the ice pop, Ash went out to train his pokemon against the wild Graveler and Donphan around Blackthorn.

Bulbasaur, Vaporeon, Primeape, Gyarados, and Bayleef all ran around, merrily soaking and razor leafing the opponents.

They could take care of themselves….

Somehow, pokemon training wasn’t quite as fun any more. He was acutely aware that at any time, he might lose his pokemon, so he proceeded with caution.

No more crazy stunts or good deeds, he would just fade into the background and become a regular trainer.

He could not afford to draw the League’s attention to him. Those selfish bureaucrats would probably try to confiscate the pokémon he had now, too.

            Grr…

            It has already begun…

Golden eyes glittered maliciously as the Dragon Master recalled his dragon pokemon. It was so easy…

            “Poor fool…”

            “Well, um….”

Ash glared at Justin. “So instead of paying me, you’re letting me have two of the baby Dratini? That’s not what we agreed on!”

            “I’m broke!”

“How can you be broke if you’re the heir to the dragon clan? Haven’t you got several billion dollars in land and assets?”

Justin paled. “How did you know about that?”

“I’m not stupid, and I don’t like people trying to manipulate me!” Ash snapped. “I’m leaving!”

            “Don’t!”

“Ash glared. “I’ll give you some time to raise the money then, but I highly doubt you’ll need that. Good bye!”

Without another word, he and his Dragonite flew off.

Justin groaned. So much for that… but if he paid, Ash would leave and he would never see him again, but if he didn’t…

            Well, that hadn’t worked.

He’d have to find some way to see the trainer again…
