Chapter 18

It wasn’t too hard to complete the mission, it turned out. He and Lance sat at a table, sipping grape juice disguised as wine, and waiting.

Ash had to restrain himself from bashing in the head of every guy who so much _looked_ at Lance. However, since Lance kept a good grip on his right arm, he was deterred from punching people.

            Still…

He was hard-pressed not to do anything when Lance ran teasing fingers along his arm, and then nudged him.

            But they had to wait.

What was taking the team so long?

“No, no, and no.” James said, backing away from an overenthusiastic salesman. “I do not want to buy a Magikarp!”

He knew what they were, thank you very much!

That droopy mustache and glasses really helped disguise him though. He backed into a girl, who squeaked.

“My apologies; miss.” James said, and then escaped.

            Irate females were scary!

Jessie was no exception; at least it hadn’t been her… Well, two more hours, and then the plans could be set in motion.

Already the rockets were locking trainer’s poke balls without their notice. It was a matter of time only.

Phillip whistled. There, that girl looked foxy. Wow!
Lance narrowed his eyes. * Not again… *

“Hey babe, want to go out with me?”

Ash bristled as Lance looked uncomfortable. “Leave her alone!” There, he had remembered to use the right pronouns…

            “Let’s battle.” Phillip said.

            Ash shrugged.

            Phillip sent out Machoke!
            Ash sent out Kadabra…

And there went Machoke and Machamp…

            “Golem, go!”

“This seems remarkably unsophisticated, as a method of solving a dispute.” Lance said. “Shouldn’t I be deciding?”

Ash shrugged. < Some people only understand fighting. >

            “It’s lucky you’re not like that then…”

            Ash nodded.

            “Golem, Rollout!”

            “Poli…”

Poliwrath’s Surf finished off the Golem. Again.

“Leave her alone.” Ash repeated, as Phillip stalked off huffily.

“Looks like she’s taken.” Phillip’s sidekick Jerome remarked.

“Oh, can it. Just because you already have a girlfriend…”

“Trust me, all the good ones are either married or gay.”

Phillip choked. “Whatever.” He had to get that girl! She was so damned hot! It wasn’t fair!

< How true. > Lance remarked in telepathy, as Ash smiled.

            < I don’t care. I love you. >
            < I love you too, sweetling. >

            Ash grinned. < Hai! >

Lance drew him forwards as they kissed. Ash kept his hands at his sides so they wouldn’t wander with brute force of will.

            Pretty strong will, that.

But he wanted to touch Lance… Still, they couldn’t blow their cover. Why was life so tempting? Sigh…

But it had to be that way.

If Giovanni found out he might be severely pissed off…

They ate the dinner provided, it was quite good, and were relaxing when Jessie and James made their announcement.

Throwing off their fake guests clothes, they quickly helped round up the poke balls and trainers.

That was when the ship began to sink.

They flew off safely on Dragonite, of course, and the other rockets had brought Abras to teleport away with.

            Lucky!

No, it wasn’t luck. Giovanni planned large-scale outings as well as smaller ones, which was why he divided up missions.

            “Shall we go?”

Ash and Lance handed in the poke balls they had picked up, and then it was off to bed after a good day’s work.

            The next day…

“You two did very well. Did you see what you had?”

            “No, father.”

“Well.” Giovanni said. “One of the trainer’s poke balls contained a Zapdos.”

Ash’s eyes widened. < A zapdos? Wow! Lucky we didn’t have to fight that! >

            < I know. > Lance replied.

            “Really?” Ash asked.

Giovanni smiled. “Yes. So as a reward, you two each get a pokemon from the quartermaster.”

“Thank you!” Ash said, as he and Lance left.

“So, what are you going to pick?”

            “Not sure…”

“You can pick two, I don’t need any more pokemon.”

            “All right!”

In the end, Ash got a Flareon and a Vaporeon. He always liked water-types… and he could use another fire.

            It was nice.
