Chapter 7

            “What’s wrong?”

Brock choked. “Exactly when did you and Lance get so cozy?”

“Life or death experiences tend to endear you to people, especially if they save your life.” Ash said simply.

“B-but! He’s too old for you!”

“Not really.” Ash said shyly, although he wouldn’t tell her secret to anyone.

“In any case, it’s not really your concern.” Lance said quietly.

“Now listen.” Brock said. “You may be the high-and-might leader of the Elite Four, but that doesn’t mean you can just do whatever you want.”

            “Brave words, Brock.”

“I don’t care if you revoke my position! But you’d be a heartless bastard to do it since I have twelve siblings!”

“Who said I was going to do that?” Lance asked in mock affrontery.

            Brock blinked. “You aren’t angry?”

“Of course I’m angry, but…” Lance smirked. “You’re lucky, Ash, to have such a loyal friend.”

            “H-hai!”

            Brock blinked again.

“I don’t think I trust him with my secret though.” Lance said, before he released Dragonite. “Well, in any case I should be heading back to the Plateau.”

            “Why?”

“There’s nothing really left to do here.”

            Ash pouted. * I’m nothing? *

< Not you, kawaii little one. >

Brock looked interested as Ash suddenly looked down, flaming pinkly. How interesting! But why didn’t Ash like girls?

            Oh well…

“Now just one cotton-picking minute!” Misty yelled.

            “Yes?”

            “You-you-you!”
“What? Don’t tell me you wanted Ash for yourself.” Lance taunted.

“As a matter of fact I did!”

            “Well, I won.”

There were very interesting smoke patterns coming out of her hearing-organs for a few minutes.

Lance stood, bemused, while Ash clung to him.

Brock sweatdropped. Well, it was pretty obvious what Ash’s feelings in the matter were…

Misty hadn’t even shown any signs of affection. Where was her proof?

Why would she like Ash anyways?

She always complained about his dense mind and lack of direction sense…

Was there some hidden rivalry between her and Lance then? How interesting! It was a pity she was so ugly though.

Her sisters were much better looking. Personality-wise, they were a better catch as well. Yes, he ought to get hooked up with one of them.

Maybe Daisy… or Violet… no, Lily was the fairest of all…

His mind turned from Ash and Lance’s relationship into rose-tinted fantasy surrounded by a harem of beautiful women.

            Again.

            “Damn you!”

“Language, Misty.” Lance reproved, shaking a finger at her, while she seethed.

How dare he! She wanted Ash for herself! How dare he just waltz in as if he owned the place and walk off with what was rightfully hers!

            That arrogant puffin!

Lance’s eyes glinted before teleport kicked in and he avoided a mallet strike from below.

            “My, that was rude…”

“Lance!” Ash gasped. “Are you all right?”

            “Hai, koibito.”

“Just checking….” Ash said, as Lance pointed at Misty and the alchemy circles on the backs of his hands flared silver.

“Human transmutation is illegal, but who will judge me?” Lance asked, as blue lightning crackled and flashed.

The rest went without saying, after all, he was the only master alchemist in the area at the moment…

When the light cleared, a psyduck with orange hair stood there, maybe a bit bigger than normal ones, and with green eyes.

            “You didn’t!”

“I did. Chimeras are very popular nowadays…”

Brock had been too busy fantasizing to worry, and in any case, Lance placed illusion dream spell on him, so he would be busy for at least another week.

He would be happy at least!

So really, he was doing him a favor…

Brock was talking happily to air as Ash followed Lance outside quietly. They were not at Professor Quince’s lab anymore, but out camping.

Camping was all right in small doses.

… Preferably without the crazy mosquitoes, lack of sleep, and night noises…

But really, it wasn’t so bad… he kind of liked it. Of course, being with Lance made up for a lot of faults.

But Lance was nice, and pretty, and powerful…

Small wonder he was in love.

Besides, Catelyn _was_ his fiancée, wasn’t she?

So everything was perfectly legal and fine! Besides, when he was old enough he would marry her, as Catelyn and that would be everything.

            It didn’t matter anymore.

            Really.

            “Are you happy?”

“Of course I’m happy.” He told her. That was a silly question! He might still be a child but he knew what he liked, and he loved her.

Always and forever and the end…

The Chaos Dragon visited occasionally, as he improved his skills, and they grew older, and loved more, until the gates clanged shut in the dream realm and the sleep of death began.

And it was life without strain and pain and duty to burden them, for once.
