Chapter 4

The journey of harrowing spirit finally ended. What a battle, had they but known the truth…

Poor children, poor, poor children, what new horrors awaited them? The water glistened so innocently above…

It was a lovely day, white cumulus clouds floated overhead in a sky the hue and shade of sapphire, verily. Under the water, however, none of it was visible.

            Ash looked at misty, blushing.

He… he thought he liked her.

            But didn’t he love Lance?

But then, why would he and Misty have been chosen together, if not soulmates? It made perfect sense.

He smiled at her as they placed the poke ball in the shrine together. Sure enough, the demon pokemon was captured.

            It worked.

            It worked!

He was so happy he hugged Misty, and she kissed him.

Afterwards, Misty took him out to dinner to make up for yelling at him and not believing him earlier.

Ash was in heaven. Finally, she believed him… he was so happy…

            They had excellent dinner.

The salad was perfect, the soup rich and creamy, the roast beef tender and flavorful, and the desert…

“Ash, I’m so glad we met.”

            “Me too Misty.”

Misty smiled as she prepared the last trick to turn. A little more, and he would be hers…

“Do you think I’m mean, Ash?”

            ‘No!” Ash said quickly.

He believed her – he believed himself – he believed it!
“I’m so happy!” Misty hugged him tightly.

            Ash blushed. “Misty…”

            “Are we friends?”

            “Hai!”
            “What about more than that?”

            “… More?”

“I-I like you a lot Ash.” Misty said, looking down.

“Oh Misty…” Ash whispered, kissing her. “I love you too.” He sipped his soda and smiled timidly at her.

She was so happy… and he was happy too…

One thing would lead to another…

The next morning, Ash was startled to find him and Misty in bed, both in their birthday suits.

            “Morning.” Misty smiled.

Ash blushed. “M-Misty… will you marry me?”

It was the right thing to do.

            He did love her!

“Of course I will.” She smiled. “We’re old enough, aren’t we?”

He was in a state of ecstasy for days afterwards, as they began the preparations for a joyous event.

He did tell the others though.

To his shock, when he got back to the Plateau, he learned from Lorelei that Lance had vanished.

            “He can’t be dead!”

“I hope not.” Lorelei said. “But even my cousin would have trouble dealing with … them.”

            “Oh no! When?”

            “He vanished a week ago.”

A week… he’d still been on that quest Lance sent him on. Had Lance just wanted him out of the way?

Was he sick of being nice to a kid?

Hmph! Well, now he had his new love!
Ash looked around angrily, then shrugged. No point in wasting his energy thinking about the past. He had a bright new future!
            Yes, that was it…

He was packing his bags, getting ready to move out when Lance walked in.

“So you’re not dead.” Ash said coldly. “I should have known. You never cared about me, did you?”

            Lance did not answer.

“What? Scared now? I’ve seen you for what you truly are. I’ve found my real soulmate! I never loved you!”

            Lance nodded. “I know.”

“Hm. Well, guess what? I’m going to be married to Misty Waterflower. So there!”

“Of course.” Lance was not looking at him as he spoke, he was looking at the sky, but Ash didn’t care.

“If you wish to spend the rest of your life with her by your side, if she is your refuge in times of trouble, if her voice dries your tears in the dark of the night, than who am I to deny you?” Lance asked, mockingly.

            Ash didn’t catch the sarcasm.

“Well, I’m glad you’re being so honorable.”

“Yes, honor… the only thing I ever had.” Lance quietly exited, but Ash didn’t quite care.

Wasn’t he going to be fine now?

            It was fine!

The wedding went off without a hitch.

Within weeks, the news was out that misty was pregnant, and it was joyous news indeed…

All were happy for the new couple.

Wasn’t it a match made in heaven? It was perfect…

So cute! They made an excellent match.

Everyone had come to the wedding, no protests; no nothing.

Even his rival Gary showed congratulations.

Ash’s pokemon weren’t too sure, but as long as their Master was happy, they were not going to complain…
